Spare in Bed - How do you secure it?

Could chain and lock it

I don't want to damage the spare with chain (I assume a chain is used since it's in the name).

If you have the money put a big rack on the roof and then mount it in there lol.

My big issues with roof mounts would be how bad it raises the CG, and what a hassle it'd be to lug it up there. I had mine in the bed for a few years, and I just ran a ratchet strap and put it between the front tie downs. I also had it locked and chained to one. My spare had road rash after riding under the pickup for so long anyway, and after all, it's a spare. One of those rubber coated cables would work, though.

Roof mounts are for high school kids with XJ's who go wheel powerline trails illegally. Gotta have a Harbor Freight brand HiLift strapped right next to it too. Those kinds of things usually end up in the "Douchemobile" thread on our local 4x4 board.

Plate with some threaded rod coming out of the middle. Bolt the plate to the floor of the bed. Handle built with whatever nut fits the threaded rod that you use. Drill a hole in the threaded rod for a lock. Spin on, spin off, secured, locked, lays flat. $50 in material and 2 hours of your time.

Another option could be a replacement tailgate with the spare mount built into it.

You have 275 65 18 coopers? That tire is barely 32 inches. There's a thread somewhere about people putting 34's in the spare spot under the bed. So bigger than stock slightly, Over sized hardly.

Although I don't have that size anymore, I do have 33" tires on Method NV wheels.

 

I know the size will fit in the spare location, but my reason for in the bed is to keep the wheel and tire in good shape. My spare is a match now to what I am running.

If you just want to keep it in good shape you could buy a tire cover like you see on SUVs and Jeelps with the spare tire on the back.

35x12.5x22 Nitto Ridge Grappler on a Fuel 22"×10" wheel.  Reset this with 4 mount so it's secure and it has just enough space for water and minor debris to wash out underneath it I couldn't be more pleased with this in my truck.
