Remote Start

Gonna need some explanation on this, that doesn't make any sense.

Some work trucks come with a bcm that can be updated to a remote start by simply a programming update and adding remot start remotes. Other work trucks do not have a bcm that is capable of being updated for adding remote start. Like was said earlier, it depends on which options are on the truck.

This may sound ignorant, but is there a way to tell if mine has the BCM? Mine is actually an LS, not that I expect that to make much difference as it is still basically a base model.

Is there something I can look for?? Or is it something the dealer has to check with their computer??

There is more than just programming a compatible fob. The hood latch needs to be replaced because of the safety switch for the remote start and if they W/T model truck never came with key fobs for the doors (uncommon but possible) there there's no GM remote start that can be added. As for the on-star remote app, it IS free for 5 years. Refer to the link. https://www.onstar.com/us/en/help-support/Vehicle-Mobile-App/key-fob-services.html

Onstar is free for 3 years. You can use the app to remote start but you have to have the paid subscription to get vehicle updates. Google it. 3 for free.

OnStar told me mine was 5 years... I will believe them over a Google search. :driving:

For 2014's the Basic Plan is only free for 3 years. Starting in 2015 it is free for 5 years. That is why some people are seeing a difference.

FWIW -- here is the info on the features included in the Basic Plan. Some features are included and some can be added for an additional cost (added to the Basic plan without moving up to the next plan):

Remote start will only work if you have RPO code AP8 and if is enabled in BCM.

This.

It seems like I am the only one here who has actually done this, so I can settle the debate.

Bought my 2016 WT in september.

I had my dealership order the GM remote start capable starter and install it, they flashed the BCM and got me new key fobs with the remote start option.

Remote start not only works with the fob, but also works with the Onstar app.

It does work, exactly as designed.

That's because your dealer basically installed RPO AP8 and flashed the BCM after the fact.

For the OP's question -- you MUST have AP8 for the app to work (whether it came with the truck you have a dealer install it later). Without that RPO you do not have the correct hardware for remote start. The internet postings saying you can just change key fobs are not correct.

Even if your truck didn't come with AP8 it can still get remote start option if you have AU0 but it's a different kit. The kit comes with a hood latch switch and harness plus 2 new FOBs, a code to flash BCM and a new AP3 sticker to cover AU0 on the RPO list. This kit is a bit more ca$h. If your truck doesn't have AP8 or AU0 then you cannot get the remote start option since your vehicle has no RCDLR.

I had the factory remote installed in my wife's 2016 Malibu LS. I'm pretty sure they had to add some kind of hardware (but I could be wrong). And about a week after the install the onstar app started giving us the option to start the car with the app. Wife was super happy about that.

Bought my 14 used in March of this year. Called onstar and they gave me 3 years for free.

Didn't know that was possibly just bought my 14 last week and well I assumed that it had already expired or I would have to pay for the feature. Guess I will be giving OnStar a call today

If you log in to onstar's website it will show you what plan you have and time remaining on said plan. I just thought I'd mention it as I'll go internet over calling any time I can lol.

Hey, recently had this done on my 2016 WT. I had to purchase GM OEM Part # 22997089 which includes the hood latch, remotes, and harness. I luckily got it on Amazon Canada for $150CAD and had the dealership install it for $180. OnStar App worked right away.

It doesn't work that way. My wife is a writer for the dealer I used to work for. Unfortunately you have to buy a module and remotes. Cost me $400

I think what he means is if you have RPO code

AU0 you have electric doors with no remotes and no RCDLR module therefore no remote start unless you get the appropriate harnesses, modules FOBs and GM autorisation pass code to modify BCM menu.

AU3 you have remote entry but no remote start or hood latch harness.

AP8 means your vehicle is remote start ready but you need proper FOBs and GM autorisation code to program BCM.

AP3 well you already have remote start and wouldn't have started this thread. lol
