My 16 2500hd silverado has a constant noise in 4 wheel drive. it sounds like a bad bearing/gear. No noise in 2wd. it is like a whine that goes up in pitch when accelerating and when coasting down a hill it makes a lower pitch growl. truck only has 4,000 miles. Any Ideas? I would love to pinpoint it to make sure the repairs are diagnosed correctly. I will take it in to the dealer when the weather gets better.

Thanks

Do you have the manual shift tcase or electric?

I know they have a TSB on mine for 4wd noise that has no resolution. At one point it was a bushing in the shift mechanism, but they since retracted that. I had mine in twice for it, and they finally told me not to worry about it...bought the truck new in 2012, sit with 95k on the clock.

Supposedly no damage or wear from the noise, although it sounds like a bearing in the front axle or the 4wd portion of the transfercase is about to blow apart.

it's electric, it has the button on dash, it's an LT 2500hd that is pretty loaded. The noise sounds like my Muncie M22 rock crusher in my Camaro, but I thought these trucks were supposed to be pretty quiet

Mine makes the same noise, dont think you will find anything wrong. It just different gears heavier duty than the 1500. My 1500 was quiet in 4hi and when I switched over to 2500 it was noticeable. But I had it checked very thoroughly by a good dealer that actually cared. I have since moved on got used to it dont worry about it anymore. I use my 4 hi at least once a week all year round its doing fine. Spooky427 thats a sharp looking truck you got there.

Check the transfer case fluid level, mine was doing that and I found the transfer case took almost a quart of fluid till it ran out the fill hole. It reduced the noise a lot but 3/4 ton trans cases are a little loud compared to the 1/2 ton case.

Thanks for the compliment Crankman! My last truck was a F350 7.3 and you could hear it when it was in 4 high but not this noticeable. I will check the T/C fluid and know the service manager at the local dealer and will let them check it out. I have no issue with it if it ends up being the way these are made. We do get some snow now and again, so I don't need this thing to break at an inopportune time.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond and appreciate any further feedback.

Spooky427 I just bought almost the same truck two months ago and the first time I put it in 4x4 I said the same thing. Not sure if you ever got an answer to your question? It sounds and feels like granny gear in my grandpa's old 78. My 2011 2500 never sounded like this and I use to drive truck and trailer down the high in 4wheel hi at 60 no problems ever.(very snowy/slushy roads). The new truck is fantastic but the noise is a little concerning.

EbaBlacknchrome, I have not brought it to the dealer yet. You describe it perfect with the granny gear! I did check the transfer case fluid and it is a little low, but not that low. I will pick up some dextron 6 next time I go in to town. I want to put the right stuff in it. I should be talking to the dealer on a couple of weeks so I will have them drive it and let me know. It won't bother me if it is just supposed to be that loud. if it is in 4X4 i'm usually not going that fast.

I have the same noise in my 2015, took to the dealer and they stated that the 2500's and 3500's had a real whine to them in 4x4. That's all I got from the one Chevy dealer where I live, next one is 400miles away so I'm curios to see what your dealer says.

Yep my 2011 was very different in 4hi. yes my 16 has a whine. It has a very different feel in 4wd. I have 1500 miles on it so far. Like you guys said when it goes in for oil change Ill have them look at it. Sounds like its just how they are built. Not completely confidence inspiring on those snowy days.

Not sure if anyone changed out their Tcase fluid early, but I like to change out the factory fill on all my drive train before 5000 miles. When I did the Tcase the magnetic plug looked like someone had stuck a cat's tail in an electrical socket with all the metal shavings on the plug. This was true for both a previous 1500 and my current 2500. I haven't had any noise from my 2500 Tcase and it now has about 24K miles on it.

I have had the same noise on my '16 since day one. Plan on changing out the T-case oil when it warms up.

Weird because my '03 was always silent in 4WD

As I indicated earlier, there is a TSB out for at least my 2012 for tcase noise...it sounds like a pinion bearing (coast sounds different from load). Under load you would think either the front end or the transfercase had a bearing about to implode. I don't use 4wd often, but when I do its for miles and miles of snow covered roads (which makes this noise particularly annoying) or towing/hauling heavy offroad (think cutting firewood).

I have nearly 100k on my 2012 and have had it in three times for the noise...the first was the TSB acknowledging the noise, the next was a TSB for a fix, and the last was a TSB stating the fix didn't work and there was no other plans to address the issue.

You can probably look those up, and see if they cover your truck.

I gave up after try number three, the fluid in the front differential and the transfercase look fine, I get very little wear metal on the magnets, and the noise hasn't gotten worse in that time. I'm not going to worry about it.

    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
    • Monday looks like a good day for the dealer to test an ac issue. Hopefully it all turns out good.
