2016 High Country SMOKING, Shame on GM Switching to Ford

That can you're talking about on the Z28 could be the oil reservoir for the dry sump system that the LS7 has.

GM did some mods to the valve covers on the gen 5 motors that are supposed to minimize the oil mist in the crankcase vapors that replicates what a catch can does. I'd love to see a comparison of with and without an oil catch can after a bunch of miles done by someone other than a catch can manufacturer.

Its a catch can. My 14 and 16 Sierra smoked heavily on start up and mpg suffered until i had the DI service done and installed a catch can. Now my 16 doesnt smoke anymore on start up unless its the cold water vapor outside of that it foesnt smoke and my exhaust tips stay cleaner

The way I figure is that not everyone that buys a truck does their own maintenance so the owner or the guy in the shop may not think to drain the catch can. While having something like a Corvette or Camaro then the owner most likely does their own maintenance or can at least have the sense to drain the catch can. I know it's not always like that, but I figure a lot more percentage of Vette and Camaro owners will know to do it.

LOL most vette owners esp newer ones do the least amount of their own work.... I dont picture most accountants lawyers ect ect wrenching on the weekend... When most people get a vette they are older and are done working on their own cars... I have had a few corvettes and the newer they where the less i touched under the hood.

Well when I think of a Vette I think performance so I think that most (not all) like the performance which means it's a car guy/girl so they don't mind popping the hood. Sure some are older people that have never held a wrench, but I did say I see a bigger % of Vette and Camaro owners working on them over pickup truck owners (these days anyways since it seems more truck owners bought them as a status symbol and not to actually work with or go off-road). So I'm not saying all, just seems like more people that own a performance car will work on it themselves. Of course I'm not including hyper cars or super cars that cost at least 1/4 of a Million. The only mistake I made about that comment that I'm now realizing is that I accidentally included all Vette or Camaro owners, not just the newer ones with the catch can. So yes, someone with a brand new Vette probably won't wrench on it, but I see more new Camaro owners wrenching though, just an assumption though. Maybe I'm just trying to justify GM putting a catch can on a performance car and not a truck so I don't know for sure, just my opinion. Plus I'm sure the engine in most performance cars take more abuse than most truck engines these days since most seem to only haul groceries in them.

Off topic here but wanted to mention this. My brother bought a brand new Z06 in 03 when he was a young buck, maybe 25 and he definitely didn't work on it himself. I can't even confirm that he actually put fuel in it himself. I tend to agree, but only just assuming that there is a large percentage of Vette/Camaro owners who don't work of their cars. It could be that they don't need to do many mods because those suckers come factory with plenty of HP. Maybe they don't do their own oil changes because the dealer does them for free or discounted or possibly under warranty. But who knows... sorry bout going off topic there.

I've had 3 Corvettes; 1 C5 and 2 C6's. I do the mainteneance and wrenching on all my cars including the Vettes because I enjoy it but most of all because I know it's done right. There were numerous Z06 owners that would take their cars into dealerships for oil changes and the tech had put the oil in from the cap on top of the valve cover that had a warning on it "do not remove" instead of putting the oil in the dry sump oil tank. As soon as they started the engine, it hydro locked and would bend connecting rods or break pistons. There were more destroyed engines (at 20K each!) caused by incorrect oil changes that a lot of guys started doing their own. One of the C6's I had was a Z06 and speaking from experience, there is no factory catch can on any factory stock Corvette or Camaro unless they've just recently started doing it. Guys put them on all the time though and swear by them...Harleys too. Someone said that the factory probably doesn't put them in because of maintenance issues and I think there's a lot of truth in that. I've seen guys measure 3-6 ounces of oil that a catch can collects after a couple thousand miles and that's not a lot; at least not enough to cause coking on the intake valves on port injection motors but on a DI engine, it quite possibly can. I'm seriously considering adding one to my Sierra just as a precaution.

My truck also does this. It seamed to have stopped in last few months.

What your truck is doing is not normal! Take it to another dealership and get their opinion.

I park my 14 in the garage and has not set the smoke alarm off yet. I have left the doors up and had the smoke alarm go off while the neighbors were having a bonfire. I was certainly surprised by that. I don't think your truck smoking is normal. What color is the smoke?

OP, maybe the simple solution is to add a catch can and hope your dealer steps-up and eats the cost of one. Sounds to me like the GM techs can't pinpoint it because it is hard to diagnose and repair an issue they can't reproduce. I'd have to agree that your video paints a picture that is not normal when comparing it to a majority of other GM trucks with the same engine. It's also a little strange that it happens at random, although ruling out air temperature variations might be premature at this point. Do you notice a difference in the way it runs and idles during these smoking spats? Would a tune-up yield positive results... probably not. Could a sensor on the fritz be proving the computer with inaccurate readings and force it into dumping unnecessary fuel down its throat, separate from the dual pulse catalytic converter warmup?

It stumbles while smoking dealer said due to the injectors dumping to much fuel to heat up the exhaust system and its totally normal.... Mine came out of the showroom floor could you imagine it doing that starting it up to drive it out of the dealer fogging up the showroom and telling everyone noting to see here thats normal.... come on. Sadly i am going to have to park it outside and focus a security camera on it to catch it doing it one day and take it to a different dealer. I honestly dont want to trade it in and switch brands but they are making it hard not to at this point.

OP, does this happen after it's been sitting for an extended period of time? It can be valve guides. One way to check is to pull some or all of your spark plugs after it has been sitting for a while (like a couple of days) and see if they're wet with oil. Also, has your coolant level dropped at all and does the smoke have a coolant smell to it? If I remember correctly, the smoke you're seeing is a light color which will indicate oil or possibly even steam from an internal coolant leak. Too much fuel will give a dark smoke color, even black.

Understandable, but sad if you end up having to take it as far as jumping ship. I'm probably breaking the rules here by saying this, but them Raptors seem to be pretty beast.

I dont want to jump ship I love GM but I also dont want to be embarssed coming out of the mall firing up my 60k truck and being laughed at as the smoke fills the parking lot and the dealer tells me its normal.

I agree. Uncalled for no doubt. Definitely doesn't seem normal... and if it's not normal then something is obviously wrong. Hello, GM, are you there?

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
