Tranny Cooler

Has anyone ever installed an aftermarket tranny cooler on their 5.3? I have the factory one in my 2500hd and the temps are noticeably different. I do tow a lot with the 1500, nothing it can't handle but would like the tranny to last as long as possible. If anyone has done it please post up which one you went with, where its mounted and how you tied it in to the system.

Now I realize they mention that there already is a factory tranny cooler installed on the truck but I am thinking about a stand alone larger cooler instead of an integrated unit with the ac condenser. I see they did this much like the s10 where the tranny lines ran through the lower half of the radiator but I would like a larger unit if possible.

An aftermarket cooler won't help, and is probably not needed.

 

There is a thermal bypass valve block bolted on the driver's side of the transmission; this valve doesn't let the transmission fluid circulate through the cooler until ~190°

 

If you modify the thermal bypass valve it will send fluid through the cooler at all times, keeping the fluid temps much cooler.

Agreed with above. If you really want to you can remove the thermal bypass and the Temps will drop but I've never seen my trans above 210 and that was towing 7k pounds on a 95 degree day

It's not needed. Want to make it last, change the fluid and filter often...

Another member "07Softail" is making some cut to length and polished SS screws to to modify the bypass valve to keep it open.

 

PM him if you're interested, he needs 4 more people to begin the order/ make it worth his time.

i just remove the center pin on the tranny thermostat and replaced it with a 12 gauge solid copper wire about 1/2" long and it always open
