Excise Tax Time

well I don't want to do the math for which is worse, but if it makes you feel any better, we pay 31 cents per gallon state gas tax on top of the 18.4 federal tax. So basically 50 cents per gallon.

they (the guberment) make the stupid taxes so complicated you can't figure out or compare anything. Our income tax is normal, low sales tax, but high property tax. No tax on on recreational vehicles, but we have to register them with the DNR, which is basically the same as a tax.

This got me thinking, "wonder what all the taxes are here in STL?"

STL County Sales Tax - 1.638%

Missouri Sales Tax - 4.225%

Combined - 7.113%

STL City Sales Tax - 4.454%

Combined - 8.679%

MO income tax - 6% plus $315

Personal Property Tax (STL City) - $8.3818/ $100 assessed (Will be $668.03 for 2017, moved from County in 2016 to City for 2017)

Personal Property Tax (STL County) - $8.3523/$100 assessed (I was assessed at 7,970 = $665.67)

Being assessed at $7,970, apparently they think it has a market value at $24,000 hahaha I am not going to argue for higher valuation in this instance.

If you owned a commercial building worth $180,000, you would be paying $4827.92/year in private property tax

Residential property is cheaper. Value of $180,000, you would be paying $2866.58/year in private property tax

Both of these are for STL City.

Missouri gas tax is $.17/gal, both for gas and diesel

We dont pay an excise tax here in Michigan but our license plate fees are calculated by value and they just gouged us another 20% this year on those in addition to bumping up the already ridiculiously high gas tax 5 cents more a gallon. They claim it is to improve our roads which are probably one of if not the worst in the country. As said the money they supposedly collect never seems to make it to the things that actually need to be done.

Someone has to pay for those 5,000+ new refugees in 2016 hahaha

Wait until that oil dries up and get back to us.

Actually the State is already scrambling to reduce budgets in light of the low energy prices. Lots of empty hotels, etc. But actually, for some reason, annual license fees went up during the boom years. They used to be lower. I think it was to cover infrastructure costs due to the influx of population and equipment etc.

Still It looks like I have nothing to complain about as far as vehicle taxes go. I guess this is why we put up with the cold and boring landscape :)

In Mississippi we pay 5.5% sales tax on vehicles. Then when we register them the tag is based on value at MSRP and if you live in city or county.

I live in city limits and payed $1,010 for my tag. It only goes down like $100 the next year.

So for my 2017 LT I payed 5.5% on final price agreed on then payed for the tag at MSRP value. I hate it but gas right now is $1.95 in my area.

Howdy neighbor to the south (NH here), yeah I almost died when I first registered my 2014, it was close 1200 bucks. Thankfully now it is down around 400.

Well, just received my excise tax bill for my 2017 Sierra Denali....holy goat balls! I knew it'd be a good chunk of change, but seeing it on paper....wow. I guess it goes with the territory.

When I was active duty living on Cape Cod and it was Excise tax time, it was great. I would take the tax form to the local town office and fill out a form to waive excise tax due to active military non resident and walk out paying nothing.

What pisses me off even more is that it's not acceptable as a deduction on your tax returns.

I believe in Missouri there is a bill in the House that is trying to make this happen. Or maybe I just dreamed it. I was looking through current house bills yesterday and I believe I saw it.

I can deduct my personal property tax on my federal return.

Depends on your state, in NH you can deduct it on your federal taxes (no state income tax here, along with sales tax)

I feel lucky on the excise tax or lack thereof in PA. Can't imagine paying those types of fees on my vehicles.

We do have a State gas tax of $0.58 per gallon though.

I used to fill up in PA all the time on my way to and from Florida because it was so much cheaper there than NY or W.Va. in the last two years the price of gas in PA has skyrocketed. What the hell happened?

In Texas we pay at the point of purchase sales tax that's rolled into the monthly payment . The yearly tag fee is fairly cheap. If I had to pay high tag fees every year, I would have bought fewer new cars.
