Excise Tax Time

Well, just received my excise tax bill for my 2017 Sierra Denali....holy goat balls! I knew it'd be a good chunk of change, but seeing it on paper....wow. I guess it goes with the territory.

Where I live, they call it a "personal property tax". It is billed yearly in September, and it is a whopper if you drive anything more expensive than a Kia. (It's based off of the value of the vehicle, which is determined by the state, not the market.)

The state uses the proceeds to maintain our roads, but most Virginians dislike it because it only affects Virginia citizens. People who live here but register their cars out of state, or businesses that use our roads but register their cars elsewhere don't pay the tax.

Is that why your gas is cheapest in the country?

Hahaha! I live in West Virginia and work over the state line in Virginia. I always get gas over there, 10 cent or more cheaper a gallon than the WV stations that are literally 5 minutes away.

Just curious, as a driver in a state where I am gouged weekly at the pump instead of an annual tax- How much is the excise tax? I tried to google it, and am I correct in finding 2.5%? do you pay that only once per vehicle?

Wisconsin has higher gas prices than anyone else in the midwest so we don't have any additional "road taxes". (Excluding IL because they are their own problem. We also pay for Illinios roads with the damn tolls anytime we need to drive south.)

here's the rates for my county in VA

Example for a Personal Use Vehicle Valued at $20,000 or Less

  • Assessed value of the vehicle is $8,000
  • Apply the $4.20 tax rate: ($4.20 / 100) x $8,000 = $336.00
  • Calculate personal property relief: 43% (for 2016) x $336.00 = $144.48
  • Reduce the tax by the relief amount: $336 - $144.48= $191.52
  • Annual Tax Amount = $191.52

Example for a Personal Use Vehicle Valued at More than $20,000

  • Assessed value of vehicle is $25,000
  • Apply the $4.20 tax rate: ($4.20 / 100) x $25,000 = $1050.00
  • Calculate personal property relief on 1st $20,000 of value: ($4.20 / 100) x $20,000 x 43% (for 2016) = $361.20
  • Reduce the tax by the relief amount: $1050.00 - $361.20= $688.80
  • Annual Tax Amount = $688.80

in addition to the personal property tax rate, we also have to pay a gasoline tax. that also goes to improving the roads and paying for other transportation stuff.

In Massachusetts the OP up above for a 17 model and it being a Denali will be paying around 1,000-1,500 for the year in my state give or take a few. Usually takes around 6 years before it becomes a minimal amount of around 60-100 per year. When i bought my 14 it was a left over so when my excise bill came it was already counted as a year old so my bill was slightly less around 750 for the year. Mind you this is already on top of a sales tax when buying said vehicle and a 29 cent per gallon tax on gasoline.

I wouldn't complain except for in a one party state like mine dominated by worthless liberals, none of the money collected gets used for it's intended purposes! Just today in fact i read a report on the condition of our bridges in this state and how over 10% of them are nearly deemed unsafe for use!

But refugees don't drive so why fix the bridges???

Sorry...I had to.

In Missouri, I paid $660 for my 2015 DC Sierra Z71 this year. We also pay annual tax on trailers, boats, ATV's, UTV's, houses, land, livestock, etc. Anything the government can make an extra buck off of. Even though you pay taxes on all of these things up front it is somehow not consider double taxation, or how if you own a vehicle for 10 years, you paid tax on it 11 times already. It only seems right if you don't think about it.

Like i said on a local news forum here, "Bridges don't vote democrat."

And they really clean your clock if you are a small business owner and the business owns the vehicle. Businesses don't get to take the discount for the first $25,000.00 in value.

well I don't want to do the math for which is worse, but if it makes you feel any better, we pay 31 cents per gallon state gas tax on top of the 18.4 federal tax. So basically 50 cents per gallon.

they (the guberment) make the stupid taxes so complicated you can't figure out or compare anything. Our income tax is normal, low sales tax, but high property tax. No tax on on recreational vehicles, but we have to register them with the DNR, which is basically the same as a tax.

We dont pay an excise tax here in Michigan but our license plate fees are calculated by value and they just gouged us another 20% this year on those in addition to bumping up the already ridiculiously high gas tax 5 cents more a gallon. They claim it is to improve our roads which are probably one of if not the worst in the country. As said the money they supposedly collect never seems to make it to the things that actually need to be done.

Holy Cow! Do you still have to pay annual license fees as well?

I think here in ND we pay an annual license fees (about $130 for a 1/2 ton PU) and about 21.5 cents in state tax at the pump.

I don't think I be buying a new vehicle very often if I lived I your states! That's crazy!

Wait until that oil dries up and get back to us.
