Question about steel wheels

My next upgrade to my truck is going to be some new wheels and tires, however the tire size that I'm going to use (285 70 17) might be a hair too large at stock suspension. My question, therefore, is if it would be possible to solve this issue by using wheels with a different backspacing/offset from stock so where the wheel "sticks out" moreso than a factory steel wheel, possibly solving this issue where the tire may be too wide. What measurements would I be looking at, and what numbers would I most likely be looking for?

Id be careful when you are changing back space. The more you have the greater chance you have of rubbing your suspension. the less you have the tire travels more front to back when you turn. and then it hits the fender. The only safe way to get larger is to lift.
