Hi folks. Did a lot of searching and reading older posts on similar topic, but I need some advice so I registered and am posting. Pretty weird, as I have not found much of this issue happening to this model year.

So my 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500, 5.3 with 26k miles developed a ticking sound, it was not the fuel injectors. I took it into the dealer right away. They listened, test drove, agreed it was a problem and said not to drive it. It's been there a week. So far, they've removed the motor, tore it down (top) and found a cam lobe wiped out. Currently, they told me they are going to replace the cam, and some lifters, and that's the fix.

I hope to get some more info soon, as to why it happened, (other issues?) where all that metal went, and did it damage anything else.

So my question is, does this sound like the proper fix?

I'm concerned about longevity of the motor.

Thanks

Cam lobes do go flat sometimes and it usually a hardening issue. It can be the lifter that rides on that lobe that caused it too. Sounds like they're doing the right fix for that job.

i am a old hot rod guy and when you wipe a lode on flat tap cam small block 350.you must do a complete tear down of the motor, check to see if there is no other damage, clean out and remove all metal shavings.if you do not remove all lose metal from the wiped lode.down the road you might have other problems caused by all the metal still in the motor.so make sure they do it right the first time.otherwise you will be going back to the dealer for more repairs.good luck

The metal will generally just fall down into the pan and not be a problem. The oil pump can't suck it up and pump it through the motor if the pieces are of any size and the filter will catch anything small enough to be pumped.

Should not be a problem.

Now...*could* it be in an extreme case? Sure. But you'd probably already know it.

did your truck throw a code? what did it sound like?

Did not throw a code that I'm aware of. Dealer didn't mention any when they checked.

Sound was a knock, or "clacking" sound for lack of a better description.

It was not the faint "ticking" that the fuel injectors make.

So your going to have a rebuilt engine in a virtually new truck, that's not what you paid for......demand a new one instead, not a patched up motor that has the potential for future problems.....and I don't care what the terms are in the "fine print".

Same problem with my 2015 Chevy Silverado Z71 93,000 miles and wiped Cam lode. P0401 I believe was the code. After P0307 cleared.

Had yours gone far enough to get the chirp sound? The lifter trays are the only thing keeping the roller lifters in line with the cam.Typically what happens is one of the trays loosens enough to let a lifter turn 90 degrees and it just starts chewing the lobe off the cam. Happened on my fiance's 2013 5.3 at about 115,000.
