There has to be someone out there that knows what scan tools will allow us to do crank relearn and ecm programs for installs etc. Other than tuners and a tech 2. Want to buy a good scanner that will also get used on other vehicles as well as my own.

I am kind of a collector of scan tools since I do a lot of remote troubleshooting and I like to know what my customers are looking at. My personal preference is the ethos pro from snap on. I also have the Solus but the most bang for your buck it's the ethos. Pricey yes but it's one of the better scan tools in my opinion as far as coverage goes for the price.

As for programming you will need a J 2534 device. I have three different types well manufactures I guess I should say and I like my Drew tech Best.

With the pass Thur device you can always get the factory scan tools on a rental basis via the PC. Not the most cost-effective way. The tech2 Is outdated and honestly I wouldn't want to flash anything with that old technology.

I bought the $400 Chinese tech2 copy off eBay. I have done two gen3 crank variation relearns, an auto climate temp sensor, two front impact sensors, and a fuel level sensor. If it broke tomorrow I wouldn't cry. I also tried the crank relearn through my hp tuners, it doesn't work the same as the tech2. I have fixed a few things with the hp tuners, but it is limited, no srs, abs, or bcm.

Doesn't look like too big of a risk to try it. I only use my tools on my own vehicles, so I'm not sure what it takes for Ford, Chrysler, and imports.

If you want to do many different product lines.. http://www.drewtech.com/products/cardaqplus.html $1680

If you just want to do GM .. http://www.drewtech.com/mongoose/gm2.html $495

So the scan tool rental works with the purchase of a subscription. Toyota and GM Run about $60 for 48 hours of use. You can rent the Tech2win and use it with the pass thru. Basically the Tech2 is emulated on the computer.

If you want to just do older GM stuff the clone Tech2 should work fine. I have never used a clone but would not be afraid of buying one. I only use Tech2win as I have a yearly subscription but often find myself always looking at a scan tool.

If you want a robust scanner to do all makes and models get the ethos pro. The Solus edge is what I have on my table right now for testing stuff on the bench. Its also a fine unit that has a built in helper but I never use it. At the end of the day you have lots of scan tool options and everyone has a preference. I have used tons of scan tools my option for price and coverage and processor speed its snapon.
