Identify this?

My plan is to take the grille off the truck and plasti-dip all chrome on the "GMC" logo and grille. I also want to put some led lights on top of my grille section like in the Spec Ops concept picture attached. But on the Sierra there is some piece just to the top left of the "G". Does anyone know what that is? I have seen people do removal of the grille on youtube and it doesnt seem to connect to anything useful?

Don't have a CAI, just the stock box. Took some screenshots of a grille removal video on youtube (might be 2017 Sierra because of the shutters behind the grille) but has the same piece I am talking about. Looks like it doesn't connect to anything when they pop out the grille. Other videos I've seen are the same.

On the earlier trucks it is not attached to the grill I don't think. It must be attached to the grill for the models with the shutters.

Here is a video of a 2015. At about 9:30 when he takes off the grille, you can see right thru that piece. Ugh. Maybe it does go to the stock box for some reason. I'll have to see when I take the grille apart.

Silverados have it too. It just looks like some sort of air deflector. I went out and looked at mine and there's a little slot that appears to vent the air up towards the hood latch pocket area. It is attached to the grille. You can see in the first pic you took a screen shot.
