New guy. Need some advice

New guy to the site. I bought a 2013 silverado 1500 Z71 In August of last year. It had 37,000 miles on it. I got my oil changed on it in October when the change oil indicator came on. They said I was 2 quarts low. I thought that was wierd. So my next oil change i had done it at the dealership in march of this year when my change oil indicator came on. I had them check the dipstick and no oil on the dipstick. They did a 1000 mile oil consumption test. I brought back to the dealership and only burned 1/2 quart. I was scratching my head thinking what the hell. So now they put me on a 3000 mile oil consumption test 2weeks ago. I've put 1100 miles on it and got curious. I pulled my dipstick and only a little bit of oil on the bottom of the dipstick. Now I've read where they replace the piston and rings but to me this is just putting a bandaid on it and not fixing the cause. Should I push to have a new motor since it's been starved of oil twice. Don't know what other kind of damage it has caused to the bearings or cam. I got lifter noise bad especially when the a/c is on. I'm afraid if I wait another 2000 miles I'm gonna blow up the motor. I thought GM had fixed the problem on the 2013 and up. Any help would be appreciated.

Oil consumption is hit or miss on the last generation of GM engines. Unfortunately you did not come to realize you had a oil burner until you had already run your engine low on oil. Hopefully other people reading this will take it to heart and actually pull the dipstick out every 1000 miles or so and check their oil level.

Here is a pic of a spark plug out of my 2009 5.3 engine it was using a quart of oil every 500 miles and fouling out the spark plugs. GM dealer did some work on it at around 80,000 miles after several oil consumption tests not sure if they fixed it or not I traded it right after I got it back to a 2014. The 2014 5.3 never used oil but I can tell you that I WAS CHECKING THE OIL DIPSTICK regularly!! and I still check oil in this 2016 6.2 it only takes about 1 minute and I typically do it while pumping gas. People do look at you strange it seems to be abnormal nowadays to even raise the hood. I had a lady walk by recently at the gas pump when I was checking the oil level and she asked me what I was doing I explained to her that I was checking the oil level in my engine. She looked at me incredulously and said she did not even know that the hood would open on these things LMFAO That seems to be the NORM nowadays

LOL. True. Nowadays you wait until an idiot light comes on or you hear strange noises. If the stereo isn't loud enough to drown out the strange noise ;-)

Fishnman. If GM will replace parts see if you can get an extended warranty for all the hassle. Your truck may be fine after they replace lifters, rings, etc.

Or have it warrantied and trade it off for something else.

There are ALOT of trucks running just fine but there are some with consumption issues which tend to get posted on the net.

Best of luck and keep us updated.

Have you been watching your oil pressure gauge? Just because you're a few quarts low doesn't mean the engine's been starved of oil. Have you ever gotten the low oil pressure warning? If you've gotten the warning, or you've seen the gauge drop to zero, then you could say the engine's been starved of oil. But there's a big difference between being low, and having low/no oil pressure.
