2007 Silverado 1500 (New Body Style) 4x4 New Tires

Hey guys I do not want to make things complicated, but if there is a community that could help me make this decision I was hoping it would be here.

I am not thrilled with the idea of purchasing tires from Costco, but they have a really good deal on tires right now and we have an offer for $100.00 off, plus four percent. By the way the deal is for a set of Michelin tires.

The tires on my truck now read P265/70R17 113S

Having this in mind, the following link should take you to Costco and the choice of tires for my truck. Basically my question is, which if any should I choose. I have never had to buy a set of truck tires before and sort of stressing out over it. Mostly because my Silverado rides as good as a Cadillac and I wish to retain that as best as I can.

I have been hearing both a lot of good and bad things about Michelin lately and was hoping you guys could help me make a decision.

I will buy the Defender tires if they are worth it but I am hearing a lot of mixed reviews on them right now. Like crazy vibrations on the highway after just a couple thousand miles.

The link didn't really work for me but the Defender LTX is a really good tire and people rave about it on here. It will ride really smooth and has a tread life of like 60-70k miles I believe.

I've got tires from Costco and love them. They stand behind their products well and don't hassle you when there is an issue.

Nice to get some positive feedback from someone that owns a truck like me. Could you tell me which ones you ended up purchasing? Do they ride nice?

Yeah sorry about that. It might be because I was signed in. Costco requires you to have a membership to view some stuff. I have been doing research and found that my truck tires are Passenger based tires because of the "P" at the beginning. They are Good Year and wondering if that is one of the reasons that my truck rides so nice.

The Defender tires were definitely the set I was looking at. When I go to the Michelin website they were rated a 3.6 out of 5.0 I believe. I remember reviewers saying stuff like they start vibrating early on or get rock hard in colder months. I have heard more than once that Costco is actually a good place to purchase tires. I guess I will try them out and if I am unhappy I will go back.

Another concern I have is about my aftermarket rims that are on my truck. You may be able to see them in the picture. They have a lip on the outside of them and require a special machine to install. I remember taking it to three or four places that could not install tires on them before I just ended up taking them to Tricked Trucks to have them installed. That place is a nightmare by the way, even though they got my tires installed.

When I spoke to the tire center manager at Costco he said that he has ran into just about every kind of wheel out there and has been able to install tires on them all. He said I would just have to bring it in and we would find out.

I guess that is a possibility, they have been good tires. I bought the truck with them already installed.

I have been trying to justify new tires for my truck for awhile now and Michelin is doing a $70.00 rebate on their tires plus Costco gives you another $30.00 in a gift card I believe. Additionally, I get another four percent off because of my membership and Citi Credit Card. Therefore, I think it is a pretty good deal. They are not showing Good Year tires available for my truck either.

Also they are Passenger tires as well and not certain if that is something that the dealer did before I bought it to save a little money or what. However, the rear end of my truck seems like it wants to slide around more than other trucks. It is obviously getting worse as time goes by and they wear out more, but it has seemed like an issue I have had with them early on.

Is there a serial number somewhere on these tires I can take note of and type in to check the current prices and stuff like that? It might be worth considering. However, since people are saying such good things about Michelin tires along with the deal I am getting, seems pretty reasonable to try them out.

Sorry man. I was referring to buying tires at Costco. I have an Esky so I went with what was OEM (Bridgestone Alenza's). I think they're fine but don't tell the guys in the Cadillac forum that.. I got flamed the last time I mentioned I liked them. LOL..

Tires are somewhat subjective. One guy will like a certain tire and another guy won't. If you like what you have I'd be tempted to stay with them.

I had a set of BFG KO AT's on my old S10 ZR2 that I got about 80k on before they needed replacing. I bought a set for my Jeep thinking they'd do just as well. I'll be lucky to get 50k on those.

Ran stock firestone tires on 01 burb and 04 Sierra. Has to replace them (at warranty discount) a couple times each. When the boys started driving, switched to Michelin LTX due to their performance in water. Ran great, worked great in water, and got full 70k out of them. When the boys ended up in their own vehicles, I couldn't believe the price of the LTX had gone thru the roof. Research/research etc found Cooper Discoverer HTP. They support the weight of the vehicles well, run a tad noisier at first, and I get the full 65k at roughly 30% less.

Okay so I just bought a set of Michelin Defender tires for my truck on the Costco website. I spent just under $900.00 and said they will notify me when the tires are in. I will probably have them installed early next week and I will try to remember to stop by and update what my first impression is.

I am still a little concerned because like I said the tires that I have on there now are considered Passenger tires and now I am moving to Light Truck tires. I know they call for more air pressure in the tires so I hope my ride does not get any rougher as a result. I might be making a big deal out of new tires, but just really want to preserve the ride of my Cadillac.

LT's will probably will have a higher max inflation pressure. They will not "call for" more pressure. Run what the tag on your door says. Add a few lbs if you're towing, reduce a few lbs for off-roading.

If you like the way it rides, why not just go back with the same tires that's on it now?

Just like my gut told me before, I should have followed this advice. I had the Michelin Defender's installed on my truck earlier this week. I took the truck in for alignment the next day and there is definitely a difference in ride. I am guessing it is because of the hire pressure. However, the old passenger tires that I had on my truck before road much better than these. I do not want to offend anyone, but there was no comparison between the set of Good Year (Passenger) tires and the Michelin Defender (Light Truck) tires. I knew that there was going to be a difference, but I never thought there would be this much of one.

At higher speeds the steering wheel vibrates similar to how my 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier did. I might even call Costco and ask them if they still have my old tires. My friend told me that Costco should have noticed and made a point to inform me of this. He also told me the tires would break in a little bit and begin to feel better, but I would never get the ride I had with the Passenger tires. I did not even know he was so informed on tires or I would have asked him before shopping around.

I have been looking around and see that many people agree that 1500 trucks should be using passenger tires. That is especially true if they are not constantly towing or hauling stuff around. They say that Light Truck tires should be considered on heavier vehicles like 2500 and 3500's. It makes sense, because my truck is lighter most vehicles on the road. It is literally about half the weight of a 2500 Duramax with a similar build.

Aren't the Michlein tires P-rated?

I'd just make sure the tires are balanced and aligned correctly and give it some time. Costco will take care of you if you are not happy.

Yeah a truck having truck tires is a good point. I use my truck for multiple purposes though. It is very convenient to take on a road trip. The only bad thing is of course the gas mileage.

I took them to my local mechanic and had it lined up and they checked everything out. Having it lined up definitely helped out a little bit. It is just hard to swallow the fact that I just spent about a thousand dollars all together and now my vehicle rides worse. I will give it some more time though, he said they would break in a little overtime as well. I have heard that Costco is pretty good about taking care of unhappy customers, so at least I have peace of mind.
