2001 Silverado fuel pump

I have a 2001 Silverado with the 5.3. It has 147,500 miles and since the fuel gauge only works about 1/3 of the time, I figured I would replace the sending unit and the fuel pump while I was that far. I know to generally choose the AC Delco brand for replacement parts, but is that the case for fuel pumps? I also see Delphi brand pumps, which GM uses a lot. Does anyone have suggestions or part numbers? Thanks in advance!

Save yourself some headaches and go OEM. If you have a buddy handy just slide the bed back.

AC Delco is OEM right?

If your fuel gauge only works 1/3 of the time, I'd look at the instrument cluster and make sure the stepper motors aren't going out. The stepper motors in that series trucks/SUVs are notorious for going out and giving either no readings, false readings, or erratic readings. You can get the whole instrument cluster (all stepper motors and lighting) rebuilt for $125 or less.

I never even thought of that... I even knew the clusters in these trucks were notorious for having issues. Either way I still plan on replacing the fuel pump, as I do drive a 500 mile route on a routine basis.

AC Delco is OEM parts for GM parts now. GM started Delphi back in the early 90s and morphed Delco Electronics into it, but then spun it off before the General went bankrupt.

If you are having fuel gauge problems, run a few bottles of Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner [available at WalMart and most parts stores] [same as GM fuel system cleaner] (NOT the fuel injector cleaner, which Chevron also makes) through a couple of tanks of fuel and see if that fixes the problem. It is famous for fixing sticky floats, and a lot cheaper and easier than an in-tank fuel pump replacement.
