A.C. Issues/Lemon Law

Let me start this off by stating I have no mechanical experience and blindly trust whatever GMC tells me. I have a 2014 gmc Sierra 1500, I bought it used a year ago and have problems ever since i bought it. My AC condenser went out and was in the shop for over a month, then when i got it back it hardly got cold, the gmc dealership told me it was just too hot outside to get cold (which is a lie becUse mt 2004 tahoe gets ice cold and so does my brother in laws 2015 sierra).

And for about 6 months my AC smells like mildew everytime i start it. I let them know everyone I bring it to the shop (I've had to bring my truck in multiple tines throughout the year for various issue) that the ac smells like mildew. This last time they said they fixed it and charged me over 300 to clean the coils to get rid of the smell, that didn't do anything since it still smells. So then I took it back to the shop a second time and they cleaned it again and said it was fixed, but it wasn't. So tomorrow I have to take it to the shop again for the A.c. issue and because my screen went black while they had it in the shop. With all that being said does anyone know if this sounds like it would qualify for a replacement under the lemon law? Sorry for the rambling, I'm just pissed off with GMC right now.

I hope you don't tell them that when you drop the truck off.

I don't know how to fix an AC condenser either, but if I was in your shoes, I'd be calling around for an expert or reading up online to try to figure out what the problem is. The techs who clean your coils and say its fixed may be no better than trained grease monkeys. You need someone to help diagnose the issue and figure out the correct fix.

I have been in your shoes though. My old Grand am was running rough and sputtering, I took it in 3 different times for the same problem. They had no problem replacing fuel pumps and injectors and told me it was fixed. Well they were wrong. I finally found a local mechanic to replace my CRACKED HEAD for me. I wasn't about to take it back to that dealer after that.

so I hope you can find an expert to help you diagnose the issue. But I don't think you should seek out Lemon Laws yet.

Thanks for the input everyone! Tomorrow I'm meeting with the supervisor over at my local gmc dealership. I tried contacting the gmc dealership that sold me the truck but they aren't getting back with me.

There is truth to ambient outside temperature vs. the A/C cold air output. An A/C system is only so efficient at removing heat. The hotter the ambient temperature, the harder it is for the A/C system to remove heat. Areas of the country that exhibit high humidity levels makes it even worse. If not mistaken, there is a rule of thumb that states an automotive A/C system is only efficient enough to reduce the cabin temperature by about a 40 deg F differential. If it 100 degrees F outside, the cabin temperature would get down to about 60 degrees F and that's it.

Three culprits could be: the A/C system was not fully evacuated to remove the air and moisture prior to recharging it with freon. There is a slow freon leak. Or, the blend door actuator is faulty allowing excessive heat to mix with the cold air.

You're in Texas - mind sharing what dealership you're dealing with?

Have you changed the cabin air filter at all?

Odor issues don't = Lemon law.

Yes they replaced the air filter and cleaned all the coils, then it was still smelling after the 3rd trip. I was just wondering if the lemon law would apply to all the additional A.C. problems I've had.

If they put a condenser and you have problems right after that then you should take it back and have them look at it. Perhaps they undercharged/over charged the system. Maybe some other component is leaking.

Correct, I did do that. They were working on it about a month and I got it back then sent it back to them. Then they said it was just too hot to get real cold. Now I'm taking it in again tomorrow for more air issues and the display screen going out (which went out under their watch)

This is just plain BS. Even if its 120 degrees outside, your AC should be able to cool the air noticeably. It may not make the air 60 degrees in the cab or whatever you want it to be, but you should definitely feel its cooler than outside no matter the temp. If yours won't do that, something is wrong.

I would have told the idiot who said that to you to go start up a new truck in the lot and see what happens.

Agreed, and when I first bought the truck last June the A.c. worked great.
