First Chevy in 20 Years

Hey everyone. My name is Jon and, I'm in the Florida Panhandle. I just bought my first new to me Chevy in a couple decades. It's a 91' Silverado extended cab 2WD with the 5.7L TBI. It had been sitting for nearly 3 years and, I was told that only the fuel pump had gone out. It shows 318K on the clock but, for $250 I was willing to take the chance, especially since it spun freely with a twist of the key. Oil looked okay and, there was still coolant in the system.

I've replaced the fuel pump, drained the old gas, changed the thermostat, both front brake hoses (one was collapsed inside), a few bulbs here and there and, gone over the front suspension and, steering components where all seemed road worthy at the moment. There was a slight amount of white smoke on the first few start ups but, now there's none.

I'm mechanically inclined and, look forward to the advice and, guidance I'm sure will be invaluable in keeping this old workhorse going.

250$...lemme see

You asked for it.

Not too shabby. For what I have into it I'm a happy camper. Still under $600 total after getting it road worthy and, tagged. The bang up is the drivers rocker panel. That happened when my buddy drove the tilt trailer out from underneath it in my yard. Caught the trailer fender. Fender won.e64fa91dbffb7062886133cc27ebc878.jpg01c0ca88a597501cb72a74767fd937cd.jpgca7b238087b7fea3ed513a9e4dda5d27.jpgb8223fd610795ebea1d3984068d90234.jpg84a326334a5ad64bc7bbf476f36397ec.jpgcdf1ebc99fd32daf2abad179d9c12ede.jpg

That's insanely slick for under $600 total.

(New to GM's in general too so this might not work at all but)

With the rocker dent, if you've got a decent heat gun/propane torch to be super careful with you might be able to heat that and roll it out. Doesn't look like it creased too badly. (Not sure if there's and way to access the back side of that piece though)

I'm not that good at bodywork. I've priced a replacement panel at around $30 but, not too sure what it would cost to have the work done. I'm going to put funds into any mechanical issues first. I need to put some time into driving it to see what all pops up after sitting like it did.

I do have a buddy with a 383 stroker he just built trying to talk me into that. Been researching that to see if that's the way I want to go. I'm undecided there.

I'm not too experienced with it either, but it might be worth trying your hand at it before replacing it just for fun anyways.

That's a good plan of attack though! a 383 stroker would be a blast.

It could be a good learning experience. I believe there's access on the back side. The fuel feed and, return lines are right behind it of I'm not mistaken. I'll have to give it a good look next time I'm under there.

A 383 would be a lot of fun. It'd almost guarantee a steady stream of brown boxes showing up at the house as I set everything set up to support it....I'm okay with that.
