Help in Pittsburgh

Would like to have my TPMS thresholds reduced because I run my tires at 50 front, 55 rear and am occasionally getting the "low pressure" warnings on the dash.  Had the truck into the dealer for the ECM/TCM re-flash and asked if they would do it.  They have the capability to do it, but refused citing federal law, etc.  Called another dealer and they said no.

Anyone know of a dealer in the Pittsburgh area that will change the thresholds?  PM me if you do as i doubt they would want it in the open that they are doing this.

Thanks.

I'm in Canada, I was able to get my dealer to do it, dunno

Changing the pressures is not against the law, defeating the TPMS would be (for them).

Agree, but they don't see it that way unfortunately.

The Hypertech Max Energy 2.0 tuner (#2000) can adjust the TPMS thresholds, and I have a used, like new one to sell.  But for 2017 HD trucks, it appears to only work on 6.0 gas motor trucks.   I assume yours is a diesel?

Yes, diesel.  Any idea if there are any other tuners out there that would work on the diesel?

Thanks.

I think my local guy has a Snap-on that will adjust the pressures. Even try a local (read: mom and pop) tire shop...

My dealer did mine, but I made them as part of the sale...it's a daily driver, I don't need something to tell me a tire is low.

See if a local garage can help you, sometimes they can...

Requires a GM laptop/software.

Talked with tech while mine being done --  using the wifi in truck and wifi in shop.

Interesting side note is that now when I look at the myGMC app on the phone, the 'recommended tire pressures' it shows are the ones we programmed, not the ones on the door sticker.

And no, there are no tuners out for the L5P.

There are 'foolers' out that plug into the harness and intercept sensor info send incorrect information in order to change ECM response.

So, I'm 0-5 with local dealers.  Thinking about buying a MongoosePro GM2 interface (cheapest interface i can find for about $450).  The Mongoose apparently acts like the Midi and will allow me to interface the truck to my laptop and pass codes thru.  Then buy a 3-day license to GDS2 for $100 and make the changes myself.

Aside from being somewhat expensive, any thoughts on this approach?

There is a deal offered that fools the TPMS...it's to run aftermarket wheels without sensors. I've only seen it once, and just recently.

Another option...

OK, bit the bullet and bought the MongoosePro GM 2.  I'll give it a whirl with the GDS 2 software and see how it works.

Don’t forget to report back. Will you be able to remove the speed limiter as well?

Once I get it I'll snoop around and see what is modifiable.  I have a BMW M5 and had a guy get into the programming using BMW software.  On the BMW there are a ton of  (~50) different things that can be lit up/modified (essentially check boxes - so no re-mapping anything).  Mostly stuff that is de-activitated in the U.S. - e.g. I can (but don't) watch DVDs on my front screen, close windows with my key fob, monitor tire temperatures (apparently the TPMS sensors have thermometers in them), put a lot more functionality (radio, turn signals) in my HUD, remove lawyer messages, turn on high beam assist (if ordered from the factory it costs extra).  The list goes on.

So, on the GMC wondering what is available outside the US.  I read somewhere that there is high beam assist but de-activated on the 2500.  Maybe we can figure how to light it up and other stuff.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
