Update:

GM now has two field service engineers at the dealer, working with a ASE master tech, trying to figure it out.  Wish they would just call it and take it back to the lab so it can be used to help others.  They’ve had it 20 days already, just this time.  Puts us well over 40 days in total. So done with this.

With the money they’ve spent on engineers, they may as well give you a new truck!

I don’t even want a new one from them, I just want my money back.  But yes, one would think it would have been easier to move me into another by now. I would have accepted it before, not anymore.

Update (Day 24 on 4th repair, 48 days total):

I was contacted today by the dealer that they have detected an issue and are pulling the cylinder heads off the motor today.  They could not elaborate more.  They are putting together a trade assistance offer for me, which I most likely will not accept.  I will share more when I know more, but it is nice to know that they owned up to there being an issue.

Stay tuned!

That is at least a step in the right direction.  I have contacted the Chevrolet assistance center again and am waiting for another call back. I told them this is absolutely unacceptable. A manager is supposed to be getting in contact with me. I'll keep you updated.

Update (day 25):

This is the latest from the service manager.  Unbelievable they are still working on this.  What in the world are they looking for?  Cracks??

GM engineering had us remove both cylinder heads to inspect the piston rings and cylinder walls which all checked out good, we have the cylinder heads off still and we have removed the lifters, valves and springs for inspection also. I have someone coming in today to look over everything. Our tech isn’t seeing any issues with anything but there is the possibility of something that we can’t visually see. I will update you after the rep from GM leaves today.”

Update (again):

They are replacing the lifters and valve springs.  This is some weird stuff.  Fuel injectors fixed in temporarily, now this?  I just can’t connect the dots on it.  Sounds to me as if they are throwing parts at it again.

Sounds like it to me too.

I had a call from a district manager today as well. They are going to be talking with the dealer. Not sure where this will go.

Good luck!!!

Here is more information I just got:

“Well I got an update from my tech just now, he found an issue with the intake valve guide on cylinder #5. There is slight end play on that valve compared to the other valves so we are going to be replacing the cylinder head on the driver side. The tech has talked with the engineer and they both agree that this could cause incomplete combustion on that cylinder intermittently. So there is a very good chance we found our smoking gun. Now we have a lot more confidence in this repair. “

Update (day 28, 52 total):

I have been notified my truck is back together and “fixed”.  Meeting with the dealer today to pick it up and discuss replacement options.  I don’t expect them to have a solid proposal for me.  I have zero interest in staying in this vehicle.  If the root cause is valve guides and springs, I am probably done with GM altogether.  I wrote them off before on a Grand Am 3.1with bad valve guides at low mileage that they wouldn’t do anything on, but I came back several years later for another try.  This is GM #2 on the retry, first one was perfect (14’ Sierra).  We shall see, don’t know how the meeting is going to go.

Went to pick up the truck, took a drive with the tech and it is still doing it, although improved.  Some pretty concerning damage was found on the valve stem/guide on the #5 intake valve, but that still wasn’t it.  They did a bunch more, but I am officially done.  They will be putting a motor in it, but I am proceeding with a lemon law refund.

That sucks. Good luck to you.  I got the “normal” speech again from Chevrolet.  Called my salesman to discuss trade value but feel I'll be in the same situation as you.

Started lemon law proceedings with mine yesterday.  Have you heard back on your proceedings yet?

I am filing today. Calling GM this morning to notify them.

That is good to hear.  Can you tell approximately what the ambient temperature is where you are now?  I ask because temps are over 40F here today and the symptoms are all but completely eliminated on my truck.  This is something I noticed early on in this mess.  The colder the ambient temperature is, the worse the symptoms were.  This is likely why I didn’t notice it when I initially purchased it.  It was the last week of August and of course temperatures were very warm.  We experienced warm temps right up through early/ mid November.  I suspect later this week when the cold returns so will the symptoms.  I would be curious to know if you experience similar results.  Keep us updated.

I just wanted to report back that mine does it all the way from 30 to 70 degrees.  I’ve driven in all of those conditions, still does it.  Wanted to close out this old post with a response that temperature doesn’t affect my issue.
