Drove around more today, and it is definitely better.  It is smoother, seems all around to run better.  Will see if it deteriorates on my trip next week.  But in the mean time, I’d be asking your dealers to take a look at fuel pressure drop test and show you the results.  Will report back next week after I’ve made my trip.

My 2018 5.3 8spd does all of the aforementioned things that you guys have described, hard shifts, chugging, etc etc. I don’t have time to run back and forth to the dealer for nothing but excuses why it shifts like garbage. I’m gonna roll the dice with my warranty and get a tune from black bear. Can’t be healthy for any of the driveline components to be running like this. Love my truck otherwise. Very upsetting to void my warranty to make the truck run as it should when I’ve already got 53k+ invested in the purchase. Would have stuck with another Toyota Tundra if I knew I was going to have to deal with this trash.

Do us a favor and report back on how it goes.  Would like to see more feedback of trucks after the blackbear tune.

So this is the answer I got from Black-Bear... apparently most 2017 and all 2018 owners (Me) are Screwed cause GM has now locked the programming on most 2017’s and all 2018’s equipped with 8-spd tranny. All they can offer is the auto tune which is a engine tune only which supposedly gives better throttle response HP/TQ numbers but that’s not what I was looking for.  GM should be ashamed that a aftermarket product can make their own vehicle run better than theirs... rather than fix the problem they lock it. Now I dont know What to do. Honestly I feel it’s mostly A Transmission tuning issue... I’m not looking for HP/TQ gains I’m happy with what the truck came with as far as the #’s. I guess It’s back to the dealer. To see what they can do. IMO it’s not worth voiding my warranty unless i can tune the tranny.

Check with HP tuners, I think the TCM can be sent off and unlocked.  I remember reading about it and someone commented on the same question in one of the posts in this thread when I asked about it.

Is this also the case for the 6 speed? I’m gonna be pretty damn annoyed if that’s the case. I feel for you man, I also have the 2018 and am just flabbergasted at the issues it has so far.

The 17-18 8speeds can be tuned in the vehicle without having to remove the tcm and send it in.  Unfortunately I don't know of any hand held tuners that can tune them, only a tuning shop.

Update:

Just drove over 500 miles with all different types of driving, and I think they have fixed it!  I feel an occasional shudder but did in my last two loaners, so I would say that is “normal”.  So as of today, I am leaning towards calling this closed.  I strongly suggest you guys with issues to ask them to test the fuel pressure drop.  I was 100% convinced I was feeling a transmission or torque converter issue, but was proven wrong.  May be keeping her after all!

That is good to hear.  Can you tell approximately what the ambient temperature is where you are now?  I ask because temps are over 40F here today and the symptoms are all but completely eliminated on my truck.  This is something I noticed early on in this mess.  The colder the ambient temperature is, the worse the symptoms were.  This is likely why I didn’t notice it when I initially purchased it.  It was the last week of August and of course temperatures were very warm.  We experienced warm temps right up through early/ mid November.  I suspect later this week when the cold returns so will the symptoms.  I would be curious to know if you experience similar results.  Keep us updated.

I drove in 35-38 degrees today through Michigan into northern Wisconsin.  I bought my truck in late August too.  Hmmmm.  Mine did it really bad in the 40’s down in Tennessee though before this repair, I had serious concern it wasn’t going to make it back to Michigan.  I have some more travel coming up, hopefully it will be cold so I can try testing it.  One could think that yours could be a fuel issue?... more fuel is needed in the cold.  If you can’t get enough fuel....?  Would be curious to see what the results are.  Biggest thing that helped me was being able to duplicate it for the tech.  He described it as trying to drive with a balloon behind the gas pedal to simulate tipping into the throttle.

I kind of always felt like it may be a fueling issue but it’s always my word against theirs so it never went anywhere.  I am going to use your info to talk with the dealer tomorrow and kind of feel them out.  Hopefully they will bite on this and run with it.  If and when they do I will post the results of the testing on here for you to see.  Thanks again!

Discussed with my dealer today.  They had a couple of questions about your experience.
1 - How many miles on it when it started exhibiting the problem (approx.)
2 - Current mileage (approx.)
3 - Your vehicle has never set any codes correct through the whole ordeal correct?

4 - They wanted to know the dealer you were working with.  If you don't want to provide name could you provide town or city?

They did not perform injector balance test.  Once GM told them to stop working on it they were scared to perform any other diagnostics.

1 - 5000 miles

2 - 13000 miles

3 - Zero codes, no CEL, etc

4 - Livonia, MI

    • This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.
    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL?
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
