new 5.3 growl when start up

Recommended Posts

Anyone else out there getting a 2-3 second growl when start up from cold. Cold being sat overnight. My first oil change was at 5000, truck has 8000 miles now. Had since new. Its not going to  the dealer, They couldn't fix there underwear where I live, made a mess of my truck replacing the headlight assembly. Besides I don't think it warrants a visit.  Just wondering If anyone else is getting it.

It's been -40 up here this week and my 5.3 doesn't sound to happy starting up either, but I don't think it's an issue. This will be the fourth winter with this truck and haven't had an issue yet. I do plug it in at night though.

#14-06-04-004C: Various Engine Noises During Cold Start and Warm Engine Operation

Quote

Oil Pump Cold Start Rrrrp or Rasp

The oil pump design has changed from a gerotor gear type pump to a two speed vane type pump for fuel economy reasons. At temperatures of 32°F (0°C) or colder, when the engine has been sitting for a few hours it is possible to have air enter the pump through normal oil drainback. Upon startup the owner may hear a short Rrrrp or Rasp coming from the front of the engine. It is most often heard during a remote start. There is nothing wrong with the oil pump or oil system. No repairs should be attempted for this condition.

Thanks but could be 70 out and still get the the noise?? Mine is only cold engine , overnight , outside temp doesn't matter. But hope its as simple as that. What year and what model engine is the bulletin for?

I live in Florida and have had that noise on all 4 of my LT motors from '14-17'. Sounds like oil starvation of the lower bearings for 3 seconds. Can't be good but the all do it, cold or hot.

I wonder why the noise would be more common when using remote start?  Its the same starter doing the same thing on the same motor...

Probably because the sound is more pronounced when outside the vehicle.

-40 sounds life changing, lol.

I think the bulletin said with remote starter because its more pronounced outside of vehicle. Dose not sound like a main, rod bearing noise , too fast , more of a growl ,piston slap. Oil starved yes ,goes right away with the oil pressure. starting to get it every day. Thought it would lessen with oil change. Not so. Considering thicker grade oil, next change.

I'm usually about 100 yards away when I use the remote start, plus my exhaust is loud on cold starts, might explain why I haven't heard it

Mine is loud too, lol.

Gotta love that remote start tho. I use the app at my desk to start when I’m at work

I remember reading someplace about an exhaust flapper.. Is this located near the exhaust manifold ? Wonder if that could be giving me the noise on start up, and not engine related? any thoughts?

Exhaust flapper is located right behind the muffler. Those have been known to make noise but think this is a different sound.

You nailed it!  I lived in the cold north for several years and owned a few different vehicles.  Nothing started at -40 without giving some sort of complaint, myself included!

Do others a favor and don't be discouraged from going to your dealership.  They will have more than one mechanic and likely more than one service writer.  Specifically request that the last mechanic not touch your truck (name will be on work order).  This request will not go unnoticed and I'm sure you will notice an improvement.

Appreciate your understanding ,but not trying to sway others decisions . That is my decision. And opinion. And the whole story is 5 repeat visits to replace the headlight assembly. Different mechanics .Including the service manger who approved the final repair ,with the outer painted cover broken. SO my option. Ill stay away if I can.
