Brand New Sierra with Trani Noise

New to the forum and looking for some insight. I purchased a 2018 Sierra 1500 crew cab with the 5.3 and the 6 speed transmission. I can’t tell if the sound coming from the transmission is normal or not. Im Concerned there is an issue with the transmission as it has a bit of a whine to it all the time. Not really bad but noticeable. The truck has 5k miles on it now and I’m trying to decide whether to take it to the dealer or not to check it out.

 

I do all my own work on my cars including the big stuff and I can’t imagine having a trani replaced on this brand new truck. I hate anyone working on my vehicles. 

 

Anyone have ave any suggestions or know if this sound is normal? My plan is to take it to a reputable transmission shop and let them listen to it and see what they say before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

The six speed in my 15 has been quite as can be since new.

Thanks for responding. I’ve owned several GM trucks and SUVs and never had a trani sound like this. Sucks, I can’t imagine this isn’t a rip and replace situation.

Take it to the dealer and put on record...that is what the warranty is for. My trans went out at 2,580 and had no choice.

 

You have a choice now so take it in to the dealer before its too late. You do your own stuff...that is good but take advantage of the warranty.

Also, if it needs to redone for any reason tell them you want to have your trans case and to rebuild yours.

The 6 speed trans has had a whine since they were introduced in 2006-2007. Especially when going from the 1st to 2nd gear. You won’t fix it. It’s a normally operating noise. If you have a video of the noise, we could determine if it’s excessive. If you ever had a transmission replaced or rebuilt under warranty or even customer pay for that matter, the core fee has to be paid or the replaced unit gets returned. You don’t just get to walk away with a free trans case.

Thanks for the reply. I will try and get a video/ audio clip of it. Like I mentioned it’s not really bad but I can hear it. It’s also more noticeable if I’m say in a drive-through at a fast food place where the truck is up against walls of the buildings and the sound is more noticeable. I have a 2012 escalade with the same trans and it doesn’t make that noise.
