Yes Wager Gulch is on my list of trails but just not sure how suitable it is for a full size truck  (assuming dry and no snow). But after reading some posts above I am also considering Rock Mt. National park as well too

I used to do a lot of off roading in my Jeep.  99% of the trails are more than I would want to do in a stock k2 1500.  Mostly due to the air dam.  If you remove the air dam and make sure your spare tire is up to par, you should be able to handle engineer pass or mosquito pass.  They are scenic, but not too difficult.  As a novice, stay on the easiest trials.  You still have to drive the thing all the way home.  Trails are usually rated on a scale of either 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 depending on who's rating it.  Stay on the low number ratings.  Colorado doesn't have much mud, just big sharp rock that eat sidewalls.

Haven't been on mosquito, it doesn't look too bad so long as you have some good tires under it and a good spare.

Engineer would be about the same excluding the lower section which you can bypass. I did the lower in mine (1.5/1 level and 33's) and the bottom 2 miles or so were more than I wanted to do in my truck, drug a time or two, transmission got a little warm and 4 low was needed with some careful line picking in a few sections. There is a bypass to start a little further up I hear which would skip all the technical stuff, certainly was amazing view wise. A new CUV jeep stopped about halfway up that lower section, surprised it made it that far. I did that, Cinnamon (for the alpine loop) and took Ophir pass over (was in Moab before). Problem is that is on the other side of the state from Springs, around a 5-6 hour drive depending on route, traffic and weather.

OP, as far as pikes go you will be fine, a rental car makes it up the paved road just fine. If you are concerned about pikes peak you should steer clear of the suggestions above though...

I haven't been on Pikes Peak since they paved it to the top but it's an easy drive.....I was stationed at Ft Carson and drove up Pikes Peak a lot.

I've worked on a few ham radio repeaters throughout the state (Colorado) and we have one up on the top of Mosquito.  While I was able to manage it with my previous trucks (07 Sierra 1500, 05 Sierra 1500, 08 Duramax 2500, and 12 Duramax 2500) I recommend to others to avoid it.
