6.0 stock exhaust system (muffler)

What is the deal with that 55 gallon drum they call a muffler??? I noticed it looks like crap from the side the way it hangs down below the body and frame lines. Has anyone sprayed it high temp flat black to make it somewhat disappear? I don't have the funds to replace the exhaust system right now.

It's much more effective to cut it off and replace with an aftermarket muffler.  Don't ever buy a catback on these... just a muffler swap is all a person needs.  But black paint would sort of mask it... look like a second fuel tank lol.

I painted mine black with high temp grill paint.  It kind of wears off a little but I just blast it again. But I also paint every visable piece of undercarriage with black paint every spring, the hasrh sand and salt wear it off so I touch it up, like axles, frame you name it I hit it with cheap flat black, it looks like new all summer then wears off so there is no gunky buildup that flakes off.  $2 A can flat black.

Get a Flowmaster   BB50 2 in 2 out and you will have a nice deep rumble and a smile on your face.

Before mine got damaged and I replaced it, I used high temp black paint.

There really isn't a whole lot to those trash cans, they are actually pretty efficient and don't warrant removal unless you want more noise...

Flow restriction... bunch of useless chambers and smaller diameter.  If you are a totally stock truck it won't do a lot swapping it... start modding and there is a gain to be found.

I put a Magnaflow 3.5 in / 3.5 out offset oval straight thru on my 2015 2500 shortly after buying the pickup new.  Great mellow, throaty sound without being obnoxious.  Just what the pickup called for instead of the trash can OEM muffler.  Never felt any desire to paint the thing.

I hear ya, I just don't have the cash after dumping a butt load in a new truck, lift, wheels, tires, gears, steps, hood, etc. I don't want a divorce at this time. High temp black paint, newspaper and masking tape are going to be my friend.

I really can't say if putting on the magnaflo on mine made any difference.   I just am old school and like the nice throaty sound like back in the day muscle cars.   I think it might has a positive effect in that I have typically gotten a slight edge in  fuel economy compared to what others post for mpg.  I put the Magnaflo on so early in the game that I had no baseline to compare either performance or economy.

Has anyone tried a straight pipe in place of the muffler on these? I have heard a straight piped 6.2 1500 that they removed the muffler and left the resonator in and it sounded pretty damn good. I know we don't have a resonator, but just thought I'd ask?

You do NOT want a straight pipe if you value your hearing,,,,

It's not that loud lol.  It's more if you value not getting headaches while cruising.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
