Adding cruise control?

Recommended Posts

I have scanned through the postings, and have found a lot of conflicting information on this topic. I have an 06 Sierra that does not have cruise control. I would like to add cruise(speed is a bit of a problem for me, so cruise is a good option to have). Is all the wiring and plug ins already there, just tucked away somewhere, just needing a multifunction switch with cruise control to plug into, or does wiring have to be done in order to make it work?

You can't just add the switch. Wouldn't that be nice though? Here is what I would recommend. It's a Rostra cruise control switch. Looks OEM. WORKS PERFECTLY! These are the ones we install at our dealership. Painless installation. https://amzn.to/2H7VpWN

Yes, wouldn't it be nice if it were that easy? I figured it wouldn't be, so aftermarket it is! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Np. I don't know if you looked at that switch, but it looks factory at least. They make some that are wireless and all. But personally that's the way I would go.

I did check it out, and it does look factory. I wouldn't want to go wireless either, way too much that can go wrong there...

There hasn't been a cable operated CC in like forever. Wireless is no less prone to faults then hardwired electronic steppers.

I don't know, I've never used one nor seen one for that matter. Just in my mind compared it to anything else wireless- what happens if the wireless connection is lost? I'd tend to have more faith in something that is hardwired than something wireless. Maybe I'm thinking of "wireless" the wrong way in this situation...

What happens if the cable breaks in those systems or what happens if a solder joint fails in a hardwired system? Throttle closes. that's what happens. Nothing freaky. Engineers actually do 'what if's' and design 'fail safes' into critical control systems. They can not afford not too. You loose your wireless and it's just like you took your foot off the pedal. You can 'what if' yourself back into the stone age if you worry enough.

This isn't like  your pinging off a cell tower to keep your wireless.

Any GMT 800 trucks without cruise control only need the multi function switch (OEM) to make cruise work but only if you have drive by wire..

Thanks for the explanation, I was most definitely thinking of "wireless" the wrong way!
