Capless fuel fill

A local logging company lost a fuel pump, when GM removed the tank there was 1/2" of dirt/dust on the bottom of the tank. I ordered a filler tube and cap for a 2015 2500 and installed it in my 2018 cap-less truck. 

1/2”? That either a bit of an embellishment or it’s sabotage/carelessness. That’s at least a gallon of dirt. That much dirt doesn’t find its way into a 3/4” hole with a flap over it. I don’t care what kind of conditions you drive in. Even if it was possible the fuel filter would be plugged up long before that much dirt could’ve found its way into the fuel system

I suppose you don't run 100 miles per day on dust gravel logging roads. We basically didn't have a single day of rain in June or July this year, insanely dusty. Every trip I came back from my last job up that road there was 1/8" to 1/4" of dust on the flapper valve door, when you stick the nozzle in it pushes that dirt into the filler neck. Do this every day for 6 months and I promise you will have a 1/4" layer of fine dirt on the bottom of your tank that will cause your pump to fail. There are probably photos and other threads about this type of failure.

eh I live in upstate NY, but I love the feature. Wife's explorer has it too. One last thing to deal with in the cold and snow when my hands are cold already. I can see some situations like the OP where very dusty environments are bad, but I've never had snow and ice accumulate inside and it's one last OBD light to deal with because of a bad cap.

Ya got me there, but I am and supervisor for an excavation company. I just drive or idle on a dusty job site for 10hrs a day 6 days a week.

 

Also like I said embellishment since it went from 1/2” to 1/4” all of a sudden.

 

I also said sabotage. Seeing that it’s a logging truck I wouldn’t be surprised if some hippies decided to put some dirt in the fuel tank.

Haha, no hippies here in the winter time, only the summer, they are tree planters and the only reason they have a job is because of the loggers so there is a lot of mutual respect. We don't have the type of hippies to chain themselves to trees here fortunately. 

 

Not trying to embellish anything, sure might not have been a 1/2" of sediment, but there was enough in there to burn up a fuel pump on a new truck so that was enough info for me to change out the filler tube for a 2015 tube with a cap. I own a excavation and trucking company and am in the dirt and dust steady, and water and salt in the winter. Its a good idea to be proactive about this problem unless you're pounding pavement daily. Like posted earlier even a PVC plumbing or paint cap is better than nothing. Don't get hung up on my dust measurements, I didn't physically see the tank.

An 'interesting' thread.

 

One of the other forums I visit is a group, with all brands of vehicles. 

 

Part of the discussion there was brands other than GM that have been using capless fuel fills longer than GM.  Concensus there is that although purchasers initially had the same fears as here, the experience with them was that they didn't generate problems. 

 

Of course that doesn't mean they will never  have problems -- but traditional cap systems have problems too.  Including the cap that is left at the pump, or the MIL that get corrected by tightening the cap.

Well, when I started this thread, the truck was still very new to me. I'v got a little commuter car now, so my milage has been way low lately, have put nearly 15 K miles on it in 4 months, the little car, and the truck sits during the week no. I must admit, the capless system has not shown any problems to me, have 53 thousand some mile on the truck, still loving it after all.

Soooo, I didn't want to start a new  thread, but I wanted to post. These damn new 2500's are so good looking on the road, I'm tempted, but just don't think it's go time on the 2020's and above yet. But do I ever like the looks of these things, I'm opposite of what my usual preferences are, I like the new Chevy's better then the new GMC's. Except for the AT4hd, that's a beaut, but the price sucks. My '17 will be paid off in a couple of years, maybe with that equity I'll get another truck....... Just rambling, sorry, nothing to see here.
