2013 Weight Carrying Hitch Weight Limit?

Recommended Posts

I don’t tow a lot with my 2013 Silverado 1500 (Extended Cab, Standard Box, 5.3, LT), but I do tow around a pop-up camper. I am thinking of getting a bigger camper. I’m trying to determine whether I need a weight carrying or weight distributing hitch. I noticed in the owner’s manual, I can tow up to 7000 pounds with a weight carrying hitch. However, on the trailer hitch receiver, it says 5000 pounds. I would think the number on the receiver is correct, but is it possible that the 7000 in the owner’s manual is correct? Or would that possibly be for other trucks and/or receivers?

That hitch can handle 10,500 with a weight distributing hitch. If its just a tow ball setup, then the limit is 5k.

your receiver can handle more then your truck can handle.   Kind of like using a 5qt saucepan, you would never try to actually cook 5qts of sauce in it.

You are always limited by the lowest towing factor, so if one item can only handle 7,000lbs  but everything else is rated for 10,500, u are stillaxed at 7,000lbs

So since the receiver can go up to 5000 pounds (What is says on the reciever’s sticker) without a weight distributing hitch, so 5000 would be my max for a weight carrying hitch. Right?

no.   You need to look at the "dead weight" max tow capacity of your truck and the "weight distribution" max tow capacity.

For example, my truck has a 5000lbs dead weight max, but 9500lbs weight dist max.   My hitch is rated for 6,000 deadweight and 10,500 weight dist max..

I use a weight dist hitch and am ultimately limited to 9500lbs max.  Otherwise id be limited to 5000lbs dead weight
