Problems with integrated brake control

My 2017 Silverado has the trailer equipment package and factory integrated brake control. I just bought a travel trailer and assumed once I plugged the trailer in the brake gain info would appear on my dic. Nothing shows up. I can’t even find a brake control option paging through the dic screen. I’m getting a good connection with the trailer since all the lights work. There is a new battery on the trailer as well.

What can i check? Or am I missing something here? There is an extra harness in the glove box but I think that one is for installing an aftermarket brake controller. Ready the owners manual I should at least be able to scroll though the dic and find the brake gain.

It should be controlled on the left side if it's like mine.  I'm not an expert, but I did mess with it and just hit + or - and the gain popped up.  If this isn't there, then you might not have the brake controller option.

On vehicles with the Integrated
Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) system,
turn the trip odometer reset stem
until TRAILER GAIN and TRAILER
OUTPUT displays.

If that does not cause it to show up, take it in to the dealer to see if the factory neglected to activate that module.

I have a service appointment Monday morning. I have the intergraded switch and rpo code in glove box. Even when I press the + or- the gain screen will not show.

On my truck, a 2017 Sierra Denali you have to be in tow haul mode. My 2015 was the same, engage tow haul mode (and trailer connected) and that the info shows up on the dash display. Now I can't tell you if the Silverado is same as the GMC as the Denali has a digital dash.

I tried that as well. Sucks cause i just bought a travel trailer yesterday to take out of town now i have to take it to my buddies for a week till the dealer figures it out.

Does it work though?  I mean can you stop the trailer with the dash controls?

On the Denali when Tow Haul Mode is selected the dash display changes to pic below, trans temp gauge up right and gain at bottom bracketing the odometer.  No gain is showing because no trailer is connected.

No. Even when manually activating brakes on dash with IBC it does not apply brakes. All my lights work. Just no brake control options pop up and they don't work.

Friend is a tech and he just told me they have seen an increasing number of these with broken wires in the harness,  new trucks with low miles.    Said he worked on one last week that would not work and they found the wires were broken.  VERY thin wires in the harness.  Could be the issue although he said this GMC would throw a message in the display,  "Service Trailer Brake System" every time truck was started.  He said the controller is located at rear under the spare tire.

PS - GM will not allow them to replace the harness, must repair.

I posted this issue on Facebook and a friend commented he had the same issue. No controller function at all. There was a connection behind the spare tire they had to repair or replace to fix it. Guess Im just delayed a week. Good thing my buddy will let me store it at his place.

I dont know what truck you are in, but my 2014 and my current 2016 Sierra with the OEM trailer brake controller dont have a stem on the dash cluster to turn for the trip mileage. My IPC is smooth with no openings, the trip mileage is controlled thru the steering wheel controls.

Same here. I dropped it off at the dealer today so they can check it out.

So I just got a call back from the dealer. They state my truck does not have the JL1 RPO code. So it may be possible someone tried to add the brake controller later attempting to get the intergrated function, which we know it will not work that way. I bought this truck used a few months back but it still had the build sheet in it and window sticker. I'm almost 100% positive the window sticker listed trailer brake control as being an installed option on the truck. They are going to pull the build sheet and window sticker from my glove box and give me a call back.

Kinda pissed I bought this truck used a few months ago because it has the standard size bed and I assumed it had the trailer brake controls since they are on the dash. I guess I can buy an aftermarket controller.

That information was pulled from a 2017s owner's manual.  My truck is under the avatar, JL1 functions through the DIC on it too.

So, Final conclusion is there is no JL1 code, I have the trailer equipment package which does not include the intigrated brake control option. Apparently someone tried to install the factory switch in an attempt to get the option to work. So now I'm looking for an aftermarket controller to add to my truck. Any suggestions on a controller to get?

    • Common Sense Assembly   Your driveline is forgiving of the occasional mistake. It will even often forgive the random serious blunder. But it will not forgive a continuous bad habit.      What? Not everything needs to be a five thousand word essay.
    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
    • Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".
    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
