sputter, shut off, fluctuating idol and temp gauge

I have a 2001 GMC 1500.  I start the truck and drive off.  Once the truck warms up the temp gauge inside will start to fluctuate from gold to hot and during that the truck will sputter and jerk. if I come to a stop or light to slow down the truck will shut off and have a hard time turning back on.   Any ideas?

I'd start by checking battery cable connections - make sure they're good and tight. Sounds like one of them is loose. Do you notice the lights flickering at night?

 

Be sure to check BOTH ends, not just at the battery.
