2015 Sierra radio screen going haywire

I posted this in the troubleshooting area as well but figure it would be seen more here.

 

So I found this video on YouTube which is the exact same thing my truck is doing. His happened under warranty and even replacing the radio didn’t fix it. GM wound up buying his truck back. My truck isn’t even 3 years old yet but I have 60k miles so they won’t cover it under warranty. Has anyone had this issue and found a solution? I would just get an aftermarket but I’m afraid the issue would carry over. So far the dealer has upgraded the software and I’ve done touchscreen calibration but all to no avail.

 

It’s so freaking annoying while driving. Then I hit the home button just so that it would stop distracting me and the home screen went into edit mode and started moving the apps all over the place so all the apps are spread out over 3 “pages” now instead of just 1.

There is info here and a youtube vid of a bad ground in the dash near the driver side speaker that could be the culprit.

Interesting. Do they take that panel off during a windshield replacement? I just had mine replaced a month ago so I wonder if something got jarred loose. I’ll have to try this next time I have time.

From what i understand, a piece of insulation was pinched between the wire and ground post causing probems.

Fix is to remove panel, post nut....trim insulation back, retighten nut and issue solved.

Upgrade to a 2018, I had a 2015 and never had issues.

Does anyone have access to GMC TSB’s? Dude on YouTube is saying it’s a capacitor issue and there should be a TSB for it but he doesn’t know the number

So I replaced the radio and it seems to have fixed everything. They said it was an internal short in the radio control unit. If I had known that replacing the radio would fix it (the few other people I found with similar issue said replacing it didn’t fix it) I would have just gone with the Alpine 9” unit but you can’t re-install the factory radio after installing that one and I was worried that wouldn’t solve it.

I am having the exact same issue with my 2015 Silverado. The dealership did an update to the radio and said that was the issue. However it started happening again last week. Is it still working good since you replaced the radio? Also how much did that end up costing you?

Still working fine.  Cost about $750 including labor (1 hour diag 1 hour install). Probably could have installed myself no problem but I’m always paranoid I’m going to snap a trim piece or clips

the new radio has to have your vin programmed into it . at 750 you could have had a new radio and hmi to add android auto and apple from th3magicpi3 or wams

My worry was that a new radio wasn’t going to fix it so I wanted any repair covered by the dealer.  Another user had been having a similar issue and for him the problem continued after replacing the radio.  Had I known a new radio would definitively fix it I would have gone with the kenwood restyle

My 2014 silverado has been doing the same thing for the better part of 10 months.  The dealership told me that they have had at least 3 other vehicles with similar issues.  They are telling me that the radio controller is the issue.  We will see if them replacing the radio fixes the issue.

Sean, I have the exact same truck as you...2015 Sierra SLT and I'm having the exact issue you had with your radio. I have researched this for several months now. I was told it was a faulty touch screen, a bad circuit board, HMI unit going bad, etc, etc. I hated to spend big bucks chasing this issue. I recently purchased a complete dash cluster from a totaled 2016 Denali for $170. Installed it and it worked great...for 2-3 hours, then the same issue began again. So it took $170 to determine it's not the touch screen and not the circuit board it plugs into. Now I'm wondering if its the HMI unit under the glove box, but those are $700! I hate bring it to the dealer 'cause I know I'd get shafted. I got a quote for an aftermarket system and that's $800+! I believe I'll do the Dealer because if it doesn't work then, they have to figure it out.
