Bug Deflector creates tapping noise

I installed a lund interceptor bug shield on my 03 1500 and ever since, I'm hearing this light tapping noise as soon as I get up to about 60 mph at the base corners of my windshield. I can't for the life of me figure out where its coming from. The aerodynamics of the hhod have changed, but it shouldn't be doing this. If anyone knows what is causing the sound, please let me know. Thanks! :thumbs:

I have the same problem with my bug deflector.

Here's a comment about bug deflectors from the Misc. Aftermerket forum.

"READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLING BUG DEFLECTOR

FYI:

I have an '03 Silverado 1500 HD. When I installed an EGR SuperGuard bug deflector I started hearing a strange sound coming from the windshield. It sounded as if all the molding on the interior had suddenly come loose and produced a loud rattling noise at speeds over 60mph. I couldn't pinpoint the cause of the problem and it was about to drive me insane until a lucky google search turned up the answer. Apparently, certain brands of bug deflector change the airflow over the hood and windshield in such a way that the rubber molding around the OUTSIDE if the windshield is forced loose at high speeds, resuling in a loud flapping noise. I applied a bead of silicon adhesive along the entire length of the moulding on both sides of the windshield and the problem disappeared. "

Right to your immediate left, you will notice a sidebar menu that has "guides" in it. Go there and you will find your solution. Mine did the same thing, and was fixed via the procedures outlined in the (excellent) article.

Good luck and enjoy that '03! :nono:

Does anyone know if the OEM bug shield sold by the dealers make this noise also.

I was just wondering if it is only the after-market shields that do this.

Thanks :thumbs::nono:

Yep, I had the noise with my OEM bug guard, but then again, I've had the noise without the guard, too. Each of my family's GM vehicles that made the noise had to have the trim glued: 2 Yukons, 2 Escalades, and my 2500HD. It seemed like any time we exceeded 60+ mph the windshield sounded as if small pebbles were hitting it.

I am very familar with this noise you guys are talking about. Recently I drove out to Montana on a fishing trip and kept hearing this noise sounding like bugs or small pebbles hitting the windshied at speeds above 70 mph. We had to stop at a dealer in Missoula, Montana and asked them about this noise. He said that a lot of people we're complaing about it and it was the strips of molding along the windshield. When I got back I took it to the dealer and they glued down the strips of molding and its been fine ever since.
