bigger tires and computer recalibration

Recommended Posts

I have installed 17" tires and wheels on my 2003 Silverado and took it to the dealer to have the speedo recalibrated for the new set up and they claimed they couldn`t do it. They said the tech tried two times to make the change and the computer wouldn`t accept the larger then stock tire / wheel combo.

I think they are full of it. Has anyone run into this situation?

Check the overall diameter of your tire/wheel combo... I bet it is comparable to a 265/75/16 or a 285/75/16... just have the dealer program it to a 16" wheel with a larger tire...

If the Tech guy couldn't figure that out then he is a Dumbass. I'm sure he is plugging in a 17" wheel in his computer... Maybe you should take it to a Caddy dealer and have it done...

I did about 5 minutes research and find that:

P265/70R17 which is the size of my current tire and:

P285/70R16 both share the common overall diameter of 31.7"

I`d be willing to bet that there are several other sizes that are d**n near the same that are in a Tech 2`s program.

The hell of it is, I stood there listening for 5 minutes while the guy going through the process of returning my truck explained to me why the Tech 2 couldn`t do it and telling me that he has an `03 Silverado with 30 something inch tires and he had to buy a Hypertech to reprogram his computer, blah, blah, blah....

I'm pretty sure that a 265/75/16 is the same size as what you have and the standard size on a Z71 and the optional size on all other chevy 4x4's... Tell the moron to program it to that size... Good Luck!!!

I went to the Bridgestone site, and they say that a 265/75/16 is 31.8" in diameter... Only .10" off, and I know he can calibrate to that....

What was the stock size on your 4x2?

Stock size was a P255/70 16.

I also had the TSB for the high beam indicator installed and while it`s still pretty bright I no longer need to don my cheap sunglasses to look at it.

I just re-programmed my truck last week. My employer just happens to have a tech II so I took advantage of it. When it calls up the vin of your truck it shows the two sizes of tire possible (from the dealer options). In my case it was the 245 that came on it and the 265 that was an option. It then let me scroll through just about every tire size up to a 275 to select for the new tire size. Thinking back on it, I only recall seeing 16" sizes, but like you stated he could enter the 16 with the same diameter to solve the problem.
