I have 15 sierra 5.3l 6 speed 72,000miles and noticed my rpm needle jumping a couple 100 rpm the coming right back down again and keeps doing so . Does this only in 5th gear. Took to my mechanic he hooked it up to computer and nothing came up wrong. Had him do Trans service couple metal shavings were found in the pan and good amount of fine metal dust. Truck is still acting the same if not worse. Mech recommended transmission replacement. I'm at a loss. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks all

Welcome to the site.

Any vibrations? Does your mechanic have the ability to shut off the torque converter while driving? Easy way to tell if it is going out, very common problem with the 6 speeds at your mileage.

You may have seen my posts in other related topics but here is what mine did..

On my 2014 i had experienced the same symptoms, shudder in low RPM, especially going up an incline. I thought it was a misfire and after getting that ruled out i took it to the dealer and they confirmed that it was the TQ. They pulled the pan out and chunks of metal was stuck on the magnet. They said new trans is needed, $5300 out the door.

I got the truck towed to a local trans shop and got it rebuilt with better parts and some mods for $2700 cash.

If you are still under warranty def get it to the dealer for a replacement.

Hey there I’m currently having all the same issues with my 17 z71 90,000 miles. Local trans shop said rebuild would be $3,000 with upgraded torque convertor. Curious what was the warranty on the $5300 installation at the dealer. I’ve noticed the fluid looks brown and notice some fine metal shavings on the dip stick. Just baffled that such a new truck is commonly having early trans issues.

My truck was experiencing pain, itching, and small sores one it's fuel line, so I contacted DR. OSO.

CURED! Truck runs like new again.

Seems to be a common problem. My torque converter just failed and took out the transmission. Is there an appropriate place to report these kind of issues?  I always hear "there has been thousands of complaints of problem xxxx" but don't know where to report the issue. I imagine most pre-mature failures go unreported. NHSTA has a complaint section but that looks like safety related only. Just wondering if there is another agency that collects this kind of data.

I am having this exact issue. At cruise 40mph was getting small blips of 100 to 200 rpm with minor shuddering. Assumed it was bad fuel (just filled up) or bad plug wire. Then about 2 hours later at a intersection would not move in D or R. After a min i got it to limp into a parking lot. Towed to shop no CEL or anything obvious. After talking to my tuner (Diablew tune) and pointed me to a convertor i called the shop who is now going to drop the pan and look ($175 fee if not.......) after sitting they said its running fine now. But blaming my tune thats been in for over a year

Shame on GM, they built a shabby 8-speed transmission/torque converter, and continue for years knowing that a Large % of them are going to Fail at or shortly after, the warranty is over.

If GM actually cared about customer service they would recall ALL these 8-speed transmissions, inspect and replace with Quality Product.

Just my 2 cents-

the transmissions are engineered to fail by GM due to epa enviromental mandates by the Feds.

they dont want your in your truck more than 80,000 miles , buy a new one is the direction they are pushing you.

the pre-failure fixes are well know on this site use the search bar, as the same failure points directed at the 6 speed are implimented on the newer transmissions

your tuner doesnt know what he's doing otherwise he would have corrected the issue in the software. and told you what parts need to be upgraded

    • Breaking News!    I'm going to tell you that I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I told  you.  Then I'm going to tell you what I'm about to tell you on the other side of the break.  Then we're going to break. Then I'm not going to tell you what I told you I was going to tell you.  But I'll tell you something else that is Breaking News just coming to the desk that everyone reported on yesterday.  Then I'll tease a human interest telling I'll get to on the other side of a larger break. Then I'll tell you one item in 20 seconds and go back to an even longer break. Longest break of the night.  Then I'll tell you a fluff piece that takes 10 seconds and sign off into a three minute break while you wait for the next 30 minutes of rinse and repeat on the local news.    In al you'll get about 12 minutes of something, 5 minutes of which is worth hearing in a 30 minute show and 18 minutes of advertising at a sound level twice as loud as the news.    Of course you can switch to cable news and hear 12 different people tell the same four stories in much the same format as the Network News for 20 hours of which the majority will be advertising.  And four hours of late night Specials about things you wonder why you stayed up to listen to. Half of which will be repeats.....   OR you can go for a drive
    • Did you ever figure this out? My 2022 Trail Boss, and now my 2026 LT did this from time to time.  I believe it was more connected to Android Auto and my phone being the cause. Maybe try going for a drive, sans cell phone.... and see if it happens?
    • I have a 2026 Silverado LT, the non bose as well.  Upgrading the door speakers is pretty straightforward. You could honestly go to walmart, or Auto Zone/ O Reilly and get a set of 6x9s for the front, and 6.5s for the rear. You do also have to get some adapters for each, but they are like $10 a pair on Amazon. Then some plug and play harnesses that are about $10 a pair on Amazon as well.  And I would also suggest a 10 pack of the Amazon Basics sound deadening. Slap that all around the speakers and on the open metal of the inside of the door. And your golden.   I am currently doing this with my Silverado. Although I am having a bit of trouble because I am snooby I guess and bought some Alpine S2 S69c's which are 2 way components and I am having to wire from the door up to the dash....  Having never installed speakers before, its taking me just a bit to get everything correct. But if you dont buy expensive component speakers, and just some $40-$50 door speakers. You will DRASTICALLY improve the sound over these stock paper cone junk speakers. I thought my Silverado had an issue with the radio/ sound for a while.  Come to find out.  The stock speakers are just THAT SH*TTY   I cannot wait to have some decent sound in the truck   What did you end up doing?
    • Its all automatic based on yaw sensor data.  If enough incline is detected, it engages.   My recommendation though would be to disengage it before driving off and not let it auto disengage by touching the gas pedal.  The HD trucks use the same setup as prior years, the drum in hat park brake.  But now with an electric actuator.  If you drive off repeatedly over time, it can torque the park brake shoes and can also prematurely wear them out.           Electric console shift will set the park brake on flat ground too.  Pretty sure they've got it programmed to activate every time.
