Shark Fin Whistle

Just bought a ‘14 Sierra Crew Cab. I love it. Only problem is at certain speeds, (for lack of a better word) there is a whistle coming from the around the upper driver side windshield. I assume it’s the shark fin. It’s only noticeable when the radio isn’t playing a song/during cab silence.

Is this a common occurance and no one talks about it or is it something I can fix?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if the following information is useful or not , I know from some guys working with the GM dealer that from 16 onwards , the front doors design of the car was changed as the older models used to give this air whistle on speed .
If you are sure that the noise coming from the windshield so it is not related to that information .

No sunroof. I checked the seal of the windshield. Everything looks normal. Sign of leaks on the windshield of fin either. Only assuming it’s the shark fin “blowing in the breeze”

Not a door whistle either. My wife’s 14 Tahoe has that and it’s sort of the same sound but its straight over the drivers eyes in the Sierra.

Get you a roll of blue painters tape and tape up the seal around the base of the fin then go for a drive. This will confirm it’s the fin or not. If it’s the fin you can seal it up with clear silicone (lazy wrong way IMO) or the fin will probably have to come off to fix assuming it’s the foam seal that has failed. Time for a color matched fin upgrade? if yours is black. Also check the roof is flat/smooth under/around the fin.

Tape trick will also work to find windshield gasket, mirror seal, and door seal leaks.

I had something similar happen.  Turned out it was the third brake light seal that was worn out. Just echoed in a way that made it sound like it was coming from up front.  Installed a new OEM light with new seal and problem solved

It could also be from a prior windshield replacement.  Being an insurance agent for over 30 years now I’ve seen it happen a fair amount.  Even happened to me with my wife’s 2001 Subaru Outback years ago.  Had the windshield replaced and at about 65-70mph we’d get a horrible whistle from the upper driver side corner.  Glass company came out and attempted to fix it twice with no luck so they completely replaced it again which finally fixed it.  Everything looked perfectly normal the entire time.

Does it have a bug deflector?

If so I would bet that's the source of the noise.

Take it off then drive it and see if the noise is still there.

I know this from experience.

I have a similar whistling issue with my 2015 2500HD HighCountry. But its not from the shark fin, mine is from the mirrors. I only notice it when I am driving during windy conditions and if the wind is hitting my truck at a specific direction.

I have the large autofolding RV mirrors on the truck.

Couple threads on the mirror noise

Mine was the plastic track above the windshield that divides the top from the doors. Just put masking tape over the end of it at the windshield and test drive it. If this stops the sound, pull up on the plastic piece and squeeze some black weatherstripping caulk under it, then tape it down till it's dried.
