First impressions 1,000 mile update...2018 Sierra Denali Ultimate 6.2

Hello everyone, I

I wanted to give a brief summary on my first 1,000 miles with the new truck and overall impressions.  So far extremely happy with my choice.  I really wasn’t set on getting the 6.2 motor, it just so happened that the majority of the leftover 2018 Denali’s all had this motor.  It is an absolute beast, from the moment you turn that ignition key.  Purrs like a kitten;  I could only imagine what it would sound like with a nice exhaust system but I won’t go there(wifey).   Fuel economy has been better than expected.  I’m in Canada so I’m not familiar with mpg, DIC displays litres per 100kms I believe.  I’ve seen an average of 9.6 l/100 kms on fairly level roads averaging 55 mph.or 90 km/h.

The fit and finish of the materials is wonderful and leather wrapped steering wheel feels very rich.   Seats are very comfortable, took sometime to find a position that I really liked, but perfect now.  The Bluetooth for the phone is crystal clear.  Everyone who has called me thinks I’m in an office lol.  .  I don’t know anything about the active noise cancellation, but I must say this is one of the quietest vehicles I’ve ever driven.

The lane keep assist still freaks me out a bit when it steers you back into your lane.  The. cooled seats are a great feature as we’ve been out on a couple scorching hot days and they really came in handy.

Magnetic ride control:  I know some of you aren’t a big fan of these shocks but I can honestly say the truck rides and handles very smoothly.  Sure the 22” wheels don’t like potholes or really bad roads but that’s  to be expected from a wheel this size.  Really love the dash layout and touch screen, it’s more than adequate for me.  I honestly don’t know why anyone would ever need that jumbo tron plasma in the new Ram(jmho).

The 8 speed transmission has been great so far and I’m happy to say I haven’t experienced any harsh downshifting or shuddering.  It really is a wonderful power train combination 6.2 & 8 speed.  Plenty of power, no disappointments here whatsoever.

I had the dealer install the Rev Industries hard tri fold tonneau cover(spitting image of Bakflip MX4) and the GMC moulded splash guards(mudflaps).    The tonneau cover really gives the truck a clean finish appearance look.  Also had the front bumper 3M Xpel wrapping done along with the 18” of hood and continued through the fenders. Tinted the two front windows as well.    It’s been a damn expensive couple weeks ☹️?.  Oh well I don’t wanna deal with stone chips on the White frost tri coat paint.  Sorry for the long post fellas, thought it was gonna be brief but I lost track....lol.

Its an awesome truck and I’m very happy with it   so far.  Thanks....

Nice write up.

I am enjoying my 2018 6.2l 8 speed max tow SLT as well.

Excellent powertrain!

What type of tint did you get? I also have a Denali Ultimate and was thinking of getting tints but I'm concerned if it will match the rear windows.

I went with the Ceramic film .. I think that's what it's called ?   It blocks more of the heat coming into the cab.  I was going to match the rear windows but seemed to dark.  I do shift work so up and driving different times of the day.  Guy at tint shop said some people complain it's too dark, so I went with slightly lighter in front windows.  It actually matches quite nicely..ill post some pics when I get a chance.

Nice! Definitely want to see how it looks. That type of tint well definitely help out especially here in California, not to mention but my truck is black as well.

Tried to snap some pics this morning.  Not the greatest quality, sorry.  You'll notice the front splash guards look some what strange.  I tried telling the service manager they are the wrong ones as they overlap the front wheel well moulding .  They should've followed the contour like the rear ones.  Made a call to another dealership this morning and found out they are the wrong ones, apparently these ones belong on a Chev Silverado 1500.  Oh well....back to the dealer again.  The 3M wrap is by Xpel, and turned out very nice.  That's something you may want to consider, again once you get that first rock stone chip on that beautiful front bumper, it's a domino effect.    If I were you I'd go with the darker tint as you are in California, and especially because your truck is black.   I probably would've gone with slightly darker tint in hindsight.   Cheers...

Get the Borla system that GMC shows on the website as an option - Mine installed with the new truck was approx $1,500 - It sounds great, and my wife agrees.  My kids love it too.  I also like the K&N FIPK but I have been a fan of those and have always added them to my vehicles.

Thanks very much for the recommendation ;  I know Borla makes quality stuff, and that's certainly what I'd install if I ever get an exhaust(performance)system put on.  For now I think I'm gonna just enjoy the peace and quiet the cab of this truck brings me.          Cheers ?

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
