1. Second time plowing, slippery conditions, ESC light came on. Anyone else have a problem with similar timing?

2. Is there a way to search the forum to see if anyone has asked or answered a similar question before?

1. towards the top right of the page, there is a text area with "Search" in it.  Click/tap in there and type away.

2. indicate what specific vehicle/options you have

Just curious, what does ESC refer to?

Edit: If that is Electronic stability control than yeah you're going to get that when plowing if there isn't a way to turn it off.

Traction control button maybe?

Got some more details on what you were doing when the light came on?  Did it say "service ESC"?  Did the car with the squiggly lines flash or light up?

Thanks, didn’t see the Search box before, now don’t know how I missed it.

The gauge showed the words, ”Service  ESC”  and a picture of a small sedan doing a burnout.

It came out after I’d been gently plowing 2’ of heavy wet snow. Gently because that’s a lot of snow, on a dirt road that may not be completely frozen, and it’s a new truck (1500 SLE 4WD) and tho’ it’s got the plow package the tires aren’t gnarly enough for that much snow. So I’d go over about a foot at a time.

So I fishtailed (and fishheaded) in the snow, maybe the wheels turning at different speeds upset the sensor? Maybe wet snow went someplace it shouldn’t?

i moved the truck yesterday to drop the plow, the light was still on. I started for the dealer today, the light was off.

Because they couldn’t duplicate the condition or find any codes it remains a mystery. A software anomaly.

We have got to stop using computers. The first couple of days will be whacked, but it’ll get better.

You can turn the Traction Control and Stabiltrak off but they will come back on at 35mph no matter what you do with the switch. I have had this in the past with previous generations of trucks when plowing and it was always snow/ice related (went away when snow melted off truck).

Jay, my previous snowplower was a 2005 Duramax (250K miles); I occasionally found more snow than it could plow but it had (better tires and) a whole big bag of grunt and never tapped out with a warning light. Rust ate it alive.

The tires on my GMC are lovely and quiet and, with creative budgeting, may be replaced for New England winters with something with a bit more crunch.

So, two days ago, GM announced a recall: "General Motors is recalling more than 814,000 pickup trucks and cars in the U.S. to fix problems with electronic brake controls and battery cables."

Quote

"The first recall covers nearly 464,000 Cadillac CT6 sedans and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks from 2019. The company says in government documents that a software error can disable the electronic stability control and antilock brake systems. That can increase the risk of a crash."

"The second recall covers over 350,000 2019 and 2020 Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickups. A cable connecting the battery and alternator may have too much glue on it. That can interrupt the electrical connection and possibly cause the trucks to stall or even catch fire. Starting Jan. 27, dealers will inspect the cables and clean the connectors if needed."

I have a GMC Sierra 2020 SLT model.  I am get the service warning light everytime that I drive on the beach and I have the four wheel drive engaged.  The brake starts clicking, but never engages.  It happens when the truck slides a little on the sand.  I thought that the ESC was not suppose to be on when the truck was in four wheel drive.  But everytime I get the service ESC warning light.  The dealership continually tells me that they cannot do anything unless I bring the truck to them with the light on.  Any feedback is appreciated.

Only 4Lo disables esc and tc.

They stay on in 4hi.

Both can be turned off manually.

Traction control will stay off until you turn it back on or until next time it's restarted.

Stability control will turn itself back on at about 35 mph.

To turn off TC press and release the button

To turn off both TC ESC press and hold the button until lights for both come on to indicate they are disables.

So I have a 2021 silverado duramax lt z71, 6k miles.....I cranked the tension keys 7 full rotations to level the front(still have over an inch of room between control arm and bump stop)...35x12.50r22 with tpms(stock tires are taller by 1/4" easily, but skinnier)......I thought my rear tires were off balanced so I jacked the rear up and put the truck in drive, making sure there weren't broken belts in the tires. Visually inspected the rotation and all, went back to put the truck in park and turn off.......every light having to do with rear axle was on!! E-brake, traction control, etc....dripped the jack, turned truck back on for test drive and everything but check engine light WAS OFF,  but pop ups saying service ESC on the info screen. Drove it about a mile or so, turning, accelerating etc. Now just the check engine light stays on.....will update when I can read the codes

    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
    • Monday looks like a good day for the dealer to test an ac issue. Hopefully it all turns out good.
