I have a 2008 suburban 1500 with the 5.3l.

I just past 100k and wanted to know if there is a timing belt or timing chain and when is the recommended mileage to change it?

It's certified for 200K miles and most run way past that.  You'll have AFM and oil pump pick up tube o-ring problems before you have to deal with the timing chain.

Im sure anything can break but from what I understand it is one of those things GM did right.    My old 97' saturn had a timing chain and when I replaced a cracked timing chain cover and had it exposed, it looked like one those things that will highly unlikely fail.   Its covered, lubricated, and is designed for the stress.

I thought about swapping it but it seemed complicated at the time and I wrote it off as if it aint broke dont fix it.

Now the serpentine belt is more prone to damage and should be inspected often
