It looks like I am dripping transmission fluid from the transfers case at the drain plug.    I ordered a new plug and will drain and refill with new Dextron VI.  When I install the new drain plug, should I coat the outer threads with black permatex?  Will this make it very difficult to remove the plug should I need to in the future?

First, are you absolutely sure the drain plug is leaking, not that fluid is coming from further up.

Second, with the drain plug out, after all the fluid is out, really clean the area and check if the housing is cracked, say, from someone overtightening the drain plug.

Third, check the case to see if it has a hole where the "gm pump rub" problem rubs a hole in the case.

Fourth, I would suggest not putting permatex on it.  Just get a torque wrench and use it to torque it down to 15 ft/lbs (that's from my '04 sierra full-service manual).

Fifth, the proper fluid for it is DexIII.  Find some that says it is DexII.  DexVI was known to cause leaks when put in older vehicles (particularly, made prior to when DexVI became a specification), as the seals weren't designed for it.  Even in '06, the transmission was specced to get DexVI, but the transfer case still was supposed to be filled with DexIII.

Owner's manual does call for Dex VI.  I'll have do take another look, but there wasn't any obvious fluid leaking down from above the plug.  This is on a 2012 sierra.

Oh, I was looking at the truck at the bottom of your post...  Forget the thing about pump rub and DexIII, and the torque for the drain plug may be different for your transfer case.

You gotta use thread sealer on that plug.  Its white stuff in small white tube made by permatex.  It isnt any kind of loctite.

Just be sure to work the stuff around in the tube before you use it.  You know how mustard always dumps water on your hotdog before mustard comes out?  This stuff kind of does the same.  So, I always squirt a little on a towel before I use it.

Looks like the housing is cracked.   I was able to see the crack after putting the new drain plug in.  I drained the fluid, cleaned it with  brake parts cleaner and sanded the area around the crack.  I put on some JB weld and holding out hope that this will seal it.  

 

It looks like a new housing is about $250 on rockauto.com.  ACDELCO 19302452 GM Original Equipment .  Any idea what I'm looking at to get this fixed?

Sorry, no idea.  I know for the previous generation truck (GMT800's), it's

 

-remove the transfer case (the case to transmission bolts SUCK, particularly the one at the very top)

-remove the VSS sensor

-unclip a retaining clip for the rear bearing

-remove all the bolts around the edge,

-then the housing splits (takes some careful prying to get rear half off the alignment pins)

-clean off all the old sealant between the case halves

-put free sealant (anaerobic flange sealant) around the inside edge of one half (enough, but not too much, as the excess that squeezes out on the inside winds up trying to plug the inlet screen to the oil pump)

-put the case halves together, on the alignment pins and torque them down (I do it in 2 passes, first time snug, then second time torqued down to the right value, in a criss-cross pattern)

-put the retaining clip on the rear bearing

-reinstall the VSS sensor

-install tc into vehicle and fill

 

Removal/installation, you really want a second person to help, even with something like a transmission jack to lift it, as it doesn't have a nice flat lifting surface and it has to be rotated in 2 directions to get past the crossmember just behind the TC.

 

Yours is different, in that it has those two visible machined sections where something bolts onto, and perhaps there's more stuff to bolt on to the inside.  As well, there are likely bushings, seals and bearings you will have to install in that cover before it can be installed, that you will also have to buy, as typically you will fatally damage them trying to get them out of the old case half.

 

You might find youtube video's on how to do this job, and maybe study online parts diagrams for the transfer case, as you've identified the specific transfer case you have (hopefully!).  Most like, info about your TC is less commonly available than it is for mine, as the GMT800 TC's had the pump-rub problem, so it was pretty commonplace to remove them, do a pump rub fix that involved splitting the TC, and then reinstall them.  Later trucks didn't have that problem, so people only dealt with the TC when they failed.

 

Finally, going forward, find out what torque value to use for the drain and fill plugs, so the new case doesn't crack again...

Kenneth, did the JB Weld solve your cracked housing problem?

I have the same crack from a tech over tightening the drain bolt on the transfer case.

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
