RandyMarsh509 Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 My truck just turned 70k and last time I rotated the tires I noticed the bushings on the tie rods looked about depleted. Factory sealed of course so I tried injecting with a grease needle (read on a forum) to try it out but they ruptured a tiny bit and have since started to creak/ vibrate on the road. Any advice on a company/ part? I don't feel like I need to replace the whole rod or ball joint, just the bushing in between them. I've seen items like these but they're not easy to find on the web Thanks
durandetto Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 That's not a bushing it's a boot to keep grease in and dirt and water out. If they're making noise that means the ball and socket is lacking grease. Probably best to replace the whole tie rod. I would recommend factory as gm has generally made really good tie rod ends that far outlast most aftermarket parts. Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
davester Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I question your ability to hear the outer tie rod ends creak and/or vibrate. Maybe try lifting up the front wheels off the ground, and pull the wheel at 3 & 9 back & forth and see if one part of the tie rod end will move more than the other end.
durandetto Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Tie rods can squeek quite loudly when they are dried out. They don't usually vibrate, but I've heard plenty of noisy tie rods. Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
Mike GMC Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Moog. They make great stuff and will likely be much less expensive than AC delco or the dealer.
Doublebase Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I wouldn't over think this at all, if you need outer tie rods they are an easy fix and pretty cheap. You can literally buy aftermarket for $27 a piece...you could buy inner and outers (both sides for $100).A tech could install can inatall outer tie rods in under an hour...then do an alignment in 20 minutes. I'd find a good local independent shop (if you can't do it yourself) and have them do it. Probably cost you $250-$300...both sides and an alignment. If you can do it yourself and count the turns (don't care about the alignment being dead set), you could do both sides for $60...less than people are paying for oil changes.
