Washer Pump Failure

Hello all,

My 2016 Sierra 4x4 Crew Cab decided that the windshield washers weren't meant to work anymore. Everything on the multi-function switch works as it should: turn signals, high beams, wiper function. When the stalk is twisted to engage the washers, nothing happens and no hum or buzz comes from the pump area in the left bumper/fender well. Had the wife operate the switch while I did some tests. No power/current running through/to the fuse. Swapped fuses with another known working fuse, still nothing. Removed the pump and used a test light, confirmed no power. Hooked up some leads to the pump and another battery- nothing. I split the washer line coupler and blew towards the washers and got a mist to come out, so nothing is clogged or seized up.

So the pump could be dead as well as another issue? Perhaps something was shorted? From what I've read, there is a pump relay that is built into the fuse board under the hood (drivers side)? How can I test this relay? Should the fuse still receive power even if the relay is bad? I've got a new AC Delco pump on hand but feel silly replacing things without really knowing the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Scott

Welcome to the site.

Do you know which relay it is, if so, try replacing it first.

I do not know which, or where, the relay is. One post on another forum said the relay was built into the fuse block that I'm holding on the left. Underneath the fuse box, those blocks just look like big, multi-port connectors.

Pumps are very common on 2014-2018.  With the fuse block installed, can you hear the relay click when running the washer toggle on the multifunction switch/stalk?  If you can hear the relay click, its the pump.  Relay don't click, fuse block is bad.  Sounds like you've got a bad pump anyway if you've put power direct to it and it won't run.

Thanks @newdude! I thought I heard a click initially when diagnosing, but then after a while I didn't recall hearing it. If it did click, I should have had power at the fuse though, right? Never had power at the fuse on any of the testing.

That entire block that I removed with all the blades needs to be replaced if the relay is bad, correct? There are some used blocks available online and at junkyards, but if mine went in four short years, I don't see why I'd want a used one that could potentially be ready to fail soon too?

Much appreciated

Yes.  The relay is internal to the fuse block if its found bad.  We've replaced them on 2014-2018 trucks plenty of times.  A couple trucks were 1-2 years old and got fuse blocks (for other issues than wipers).

I think it is dumb that GM did this and it definitely is one of those things that makes customers say WTF. BUT!!! At least the part is pretty cheap. If my research is correct then its only $60 and change off GMpartsdirect and this is the number 84354721 (for my 18 anyways)

I may be wrong but the distribution block you linked to looks like the part that mounts over the battery and not the fuse box. If you are replacing the fuse/relay block, I think this is what you need. And I agree that to make relays integral into the fuse block is just plain stupid...

Stupid to us do -it  your selfers.

Money saved for production to GM.

@mikeyk101 you have the base there, which I think just holds all of the connectors in place. I was thinking the relay would be housed within the top portion of the fuse box. Part number 84075772

Do you see an old part # on your fuse block?  The number you've got isn't correct.  That one is for the eAssist trucks.

Yes, see pic below. 23387798 which I thought was replaced by the one above, 84075772?

Negative on going to 84075772.  The correct supersession is to 84075773.
