Howdy all,

I’ve just had my 5.3 engine rebuilt on my 2014 Silverado due to lifter problems. This truck has the 6 speed transmission.

 

Trucks’ problem:

Very often, when I’m accelerating or cruising at lower-mid rpms I get a weird hesitation/uneven lack of power that doesn’t go away unless I give it more pedal, or let off.

 

It usually happens when I’m on a straight way, maintaining speed, and want to pick up just a little bit of speed. Or If I’m cruising up a hill it acts up until it down shifts.

 

What it does could be described as a “miss” or miss fire, but it feels more like the truck just isn’t shifting soon enough. Kinda like riding an atv/dirt bike riding in too high a gear putting more load on the engine.

 

Also, tow/haul mode makes it pretty much unnoticeable, but I can kinda tell it’s still there.

 

I’m not really sure if it did this before my rebuild. I didn’t have the truck long before then.

 

 

- Could this be something with the computer ?it was sent off to have the v4 mode complete programmed out of it, but, I’m wondering if the transmission still has parameters for v4 mode that kick in.. just a thought. I’m really not sure on this one.

 

 

Anyone experiencing this sort of thing?

I could be completely wrong about it not shifting soon enough but that’s just the feeling.

Also, forgot to mention: my rpms will just go up and down ~100 rpms usually when it’s acting up. I can put a video of that if that would help diagnose.

There is nothing else to change for the AFM on the transmission side of the calibration. It's a master enable/disable table that gets change on the PCM half of the calibration, once changed that is all that needs to be done.

 

The 100rpm up or down sounds like it's trying to decide if it needs to keep the torque converter locked or unlocked. Things like that could be changed with the tune if someone knew what they were doing with a computer. There are many shift settings and torque converter settings that someone can do.

 

Though it is entirely possible that even with a tune that the torque converter still has an internal problem.

If it was the torque converter, I’m wondering if I should be able to just replace it and fluids and resolve it. I was thinking about having someone look at tuning it but I wouldn’t want that to “fix it” if I actually did have a internal problem with it.

Anyone know if I would have any codes readable from the transmission ? I’m not sure if that’s possible with a regular obd2 reader.

When I had my engine done my transmission fluid was a little bit low.

You may be having the very common TQ slipping issue. Its a sign that its on its way out. I had my trans fully rebuilt at 122k miles.

If you catch it early,before any of the clutches get damaged you may be able to just get the TQ replaced but with a fresh rebuilt, i would say a rebuild trans will be ideal for longevity.

Hmm. Well I’m hitting 150k on mine. I’d replace the torque converter,but like you say ideally I’d do the trans and torque converter if I’m just going to go that route. And I just had my engine done last month *sighhh*

About how much did you have your transmission done for on your truck if you don’t mind? And if it’s a similar year as mine is.

Maybe after all this I’ll have a pretty stout truck for a while.

Mine was 2700 from a local shop. Dealer wanted 5300 to put in another GM one. I got mine built with better parts and added shift lit and thermostat delete and few other "better than GM" replacement parts.

Okay cool. Well, maybe I’ll drive it like it is for a little bit unless it gives me a lot of trouble and then just have the transmission done later. what is the other thing you are talking about with the shifting part(s)?

I wonder if a fluid change would smooth things out for now?

GM does have a new fluid out that's supposed to be better so you may want to get that and do a pan drop and change. Then you can see if the transmission pan magnet has any metal on it.

The GM fluid is for the 8 speeds.

 

The 6 speed should only use Dexron 6 fluid only.

Just picked up my CPO 2018 with 6 speed and 5,600 miles on it. Sounds like mine doing the same thing. Feels like hesitation or something holding it back from running smooth down the road. My 2006 is smooth as silk. Reading this post i am wondering if my newly acquired truck has an issue. Very noticeable to me no light lit on dash or anything.

 

Is it possible just not pushing on gas pedal hard enough?

 

This something to be concerned about tearing up the tranny? My truck still under warranty so would want to address this while warranty status.

The AFM system, or Active Fuel Management system, is used to limit the power of a GM 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder engine and help increase its fuel economy. The system itself is activated when the engine reaches certain perimeters, such as a cruising highway speed.

 

In your case the engine will reduce down to 4 cylinders when all conditions are right.

If you look at your DIC while driving, you will see a green V4 or a blue V8 in the bottom right hand corner.

 

As far as the gas pedal, yes, there is a known flex problem where you need to "stand on it" at times to get the truck moving.

That’s terrible to be happening on such newer trucks. I drive a 2013 Silverado for work and I’ve never felt a problem like mine is having. So I definitely wouldn’t call it normal. I’m still trying to figure out what is going on. I may try some fluid additive and see if that changes anything so I can at least narrow it down.
With yours still being under warranty, you should definitely get the dealer to replace anything to get it fixed. Even if it means having them replace the transmission.

I really hate to but if I can’t get it figured out I’m going to plan on replacing mine in the next year or so.

Did you get it worked out? I’m having the same problems. Went through lifters, had the delete. But also had a new torque converter and rebuilt tranny and still having these problems. No code, 2 shops and gmc dealership cannot figure it out either.

    • If everything checks out at the MAF, then the MAF is BAD, new or not.   You don't need a signal generator to troubleshoot this. PCM needs ALL powers and ALL grounds able to light a halogen headlight bulb - if it can light the bulb bright, then the wiring is good enough to run the PCM.   Best thing you can do for yourself is spend some time here: scannerdanner.com - Check out all his YouTube videos on similar issues. If you decide to subscribe it's the best bang-for-buck ratio in the automotive world, hands-down. He's got TONS of free vids on YouTube, too.
    • Yes, I used my multimeter to probe all of the wires at the MAF, both with the sensor connected, sensor disconnected, key on engine off, key on engine running, etc etc etc. I probed all of the wires again at the PCM, at the connectors, etc. All voltages are what they should be according to the service manual/wiring diagrams. All grounds are good, less than 20 millivolts from the battery negative under load. Both at the connector of the MAF, at the PCM connector etc.      I know this throws a pretty big wrench into things, but this truck was acting up before the swap. I don't have very much information, if any on what was causing it, but if you cleared all of the dtcs it would do the same thing where it would crank, fire, then die. And it would do the same thing a dozen or so times, and eventually it would start and run, but the difference is that it would run and actually be drivable. Whereas now if you can drive it at all, it goes into reduced power mode almost immediately, and even then it's not running correctly. When you come to a stop at a light it stumbles down to for 500 RPM before catching itself and returning to the smooth idle. And if you go more than about 50% throttle then it immediately goes back to doing the misfire thing.    Like I said, I know that throws a wrench into things, and unfortunately I was not able to pull any data or anything like that before I did this work, so I don't have much to go on.    I'm trying to not fixate on one particular thing as the cause of the problem, but it seems like all avenues are pointing me towards the PCM. Like I said I have tested the wiring extensively (see above), and during cranking the sensor does produce seemingly legitimate values at least according to my multimeter, but as soon as the engine fires those values quickly descend into gibberish. I've tried it with multiple different known working sensors, I have done literally every test I can think of multiple times on the wiring (probing the signals, probing the pins with the sensors unplugged, probing the pins at the PCM, voltage drop, voltage drop under load, continuity, ohms, and double-checking everything against the wiring diagrams/ proper values in the service data.)    Another thing that pushes me towards a possible PCM failure is, I have noticed in troubleshooting a little bit taking a break and coming back, that when I leave the truck to sit for a while and cool off, it starts and runs smoothly when I first start it up. However once it warms up. It starts having problems. For example, when I went out to the truck this morning after it had been sitting overnight, I was actually able to drive it down the block. And then once I got on the throttle a Little bit after going about a thousand ft, it started misfiring again. I pulled it back into the driveway, shut it down, and started it back up. It idled smoothly. As soon as I touched the throttle it did the misfire thing again. From then on as soon as I started it it would misfire. I shut the truck off and went to go get a coffee and do a bit more research. When I came back out I started the truck up and it immediately went into the smooth idle. After a couple of minutes of playing around with it, it would not idle smoothly anymore. Let it sit a couple of hours, rinse and repeat. This makes me think with temperature change something is going wrong inside the PCM. I have the PCM out of the 2007 donor vehicle and I'm thinking of getting a one-day subscription to the ACDelco programming service to try and program that and see if it helps.   Like I said, I'm really trying to not fixate myself on one potential cause, but it seems everything is pointing me towards PCM failure. I would really like to try to confirm that, but unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope or a signal generator to do the GM service procedure where you feed 5 khz into the signal pin. 
    • Ahh, sorry about that - I got some bad info. Newdude is correct. That's what I get for working 13 hours straight ... on my "vacation", lol.   Should've checked the files I had instead of the internet.   Anyway ... this is GREAT news, since this would've been an absolute friggin nightmare to get working.   I don't think the lack of VVT is causing this - you've got another issue. Wiring, I'm betting.   I'm telling you right now, your computer isn't bad. If it worked before the swap, it's working now. You need to do some more (better) diagnostics and figure out exactly what you're missing. Did you test every wire directly at the MAF? Have 5V reference? Ground? If you're reading ZERO g/s, your Hz isn't much use - it's going to be the wrong value anyway. The MAF is not working, and you need to find out WHY.   I got this off the net, so VERIFY first: Pin A: Black (BLK) wire, Circuit 552, serves as the Sensor Return (Ground).  Pin B: Tan (TAN) wire, Circuit 472, carries the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) signal.  Pin C: Yellow (YEL) wire, Circuit 492, is the primary MAF Sensor Signal output to the PCM. Pin D: Pink (PNK) wire, Circuit 339 or 539, provides Ignition 1 Voltage (Power).  Pin E: Tan/Black wire, Circuit 552 or similar, often associated with the Intake Air Temperature ground or signal return.  Global-A list: https://postimg.cc/KKJnQC85    
    • Correct....the end user can't reach to Realtruck directly like they can if they purchase a Bak, Undercover, etc...  It has to go through a dealer.
