Good Morning!  I am shopping my next truck and was hoping to get some real world advice from folks on here.  I currently have a 2017 Silverado with 5.3.  Its an OK truck but a plain LT with no real creature comforts.  I was looking at a new AT4 with 5.3 but then I started reading up on the new 3.0 Diesel.  Everything sounds like the 3.0 would be the perfect fit for me.  I drive about 40 miles one way to work on a 55mph two lane road.  I feel like the 3.0 would really shine there.  I also have a boat i tow a few times a year that weighs about 5000 lbs.  Either motor would work for that I am sure.

RAM for me is out as the hemi MPG doesnt appeal to me and the ecodiesel just seems like a headache.  I did have a ecoboost before my Silverado and loved the power.  I know a new F150 is coming with a hybrid but who knows what headaches that will bring.  The 3.0 Diesel is new as well and there seems to be a few videos of some overheating issues?  Also see plenty of happy owners too.

Am I crazy for considering the diesel?  Any other factors I should consider?

I came from a Ram and went to the new 3.0 Duramax Silverado.  Fuel economy is excellent compared to the ram.  The truck pulls like a charm with all the torque almost instantly.  I really like the decision I made.  It is a great truck. Before I made the decision, I looked at several factors.  Diesel where I am at is usually only $.20 more a gallon.  I know some states it is a big difference so that cost will add up on top of the almost 4k cost for the upgraded engine.  I know it will take time to recoup the cost of the engine upgrade.  I average 25 mpg on this truck vs 13 on the ram.  I was filling up the ram at 330 miles on a 26 gallon tank and over 500 miles on 24 gallon tank on the silverado.  Also need to factor DEF and fuel filters on the Silverado.  With that being said, if diesel isn't much more per gallon where you live I would get the diesel.

Picked up a GMC AT4 w/3.0l and finally got to spend some time in it this past week on vacation. 70-80 mph ave on first tank saw 27mpg. Second tank wasn't pushing it that much mph wise and was seeing 29mpg for the next tank. Engine and tranny are smooth and quiet, great power whenever you need it. Reading all the hype prior to buying but didn't buy in to it until I took one for a test ride. If you get a chance to take one out I think you'll be sold on it. I really wasn't looking at a diesel at first, wanted the 6.2l, but more I thought about it fits me for what I wanted. Check out your options and see what fits your needs/wants, your dollar.

Myko50, sounds like a perfect application for the 3.0.

If mileage is important, I'd probably steer away from the lifted versions.
