Catback va muffler - what am I missing?

Seems like catbacks are what everyone seems to be getting right now, but I don't see the benefit, at least on paper when it comes to cost vs going with a muffler replacement only.

 

It seems like on a catback you may increase horsepower by 10 hp or so and might get a slight improvement in mpg, but the sound improvements would largely be the same as just using a muffler.

 

Am I correct or are there other benefits to going with a catback that I'm just unaware of?

Hey bud, 

 

You have the just of it, the only advantage of a back system is the material is typically 304 stainless. On a good kit anyway. They normally claim mandrel bent but the stock exhaust is aswell. 

 

They also usually come with tips, besides that not much difference. Now on the chevy/gm the exhaust pipe is 2.75” , on the catbacks they are 3”, a replacement muffler is also 3” in/out.

Remember back in the day factory exhausts were narrow, crimp bent, and not always stainless. Cat backs improved all of that. 
 

Now?  Not so much. I plan on replacing muffler and eliminating the flapper and that’s it.

Appreciate the replies, glad to hear it, I just don't think I could justify 1500+ for a good catback, but really want some better sound.

Yeah I had watched that, may consider it, really like the sound on the borlas though.
