Passenger side ticking sound. What is it?

Especially when cold in the garage.  Sound like an exhaust leak but it isn't.  I can even hear it occasionally when cruising under very light throttle.  Sounds like it under the passenger floorboard.

I hear the same noise.... especially when you drive by a wall on the passenger side you can hear it coming back at you and it's only when you lightly tap the throttle.... Interested as well!!! Drives me crazy, I hear everything in cars.

I have/had this on my 3.0 diesel. I got under the truck, remote started it and moved my exhaust around. I think the noise is from the flexible connector on the exhaust. I did manage to get rid of the noise by putting 175lb tension duct straps around the exhaust isolators towards the rear of the truck to tighten them up. The noise instantly disappeared and has not been back since. 
 

The noise very slowly got worse until I did something about it, so I’m guessing the isolators start to loosen up and sag over time which allows the exhaust to vibrate just right to rattle the flex connector. Also worth noting is that the isolators themselves feel to be made from a softer rubber than others I have seen in the past.

Thanks for the help.  I do not believe that is the sound I am hearing.  My truck does it with the stock exhaust and Borla Touring.  I don't think the noise is something that is "wrong", I would just like to know what it is.  Worse when it is cold and can hear it when warm under part throttle.  Sounds like a rattle or exhaust leak.

Mine sounded exactly like a rattle/exhaust leak, maybe even a heat shield rattling against something. It actually sounded loudest as if it was inside the DPF. I had no check engine lights and when I floored it or even just got on it, I did not hear it. Only at idle or very light throttle. Until I actually moved that flex connector around, I did not suspect it to be the cause, but even a little movement makes the sound come and go away. Just pulling/pushing up on the exhaust tip gets rid of the sound, I think it has to do with the alignment of the exhaust. Here’s some pictures of what I did.

I have a 2020 Silverado RST 6.2 and had a tapping/ticking noise heard from the passenger side front of the vehicle around the front passenger floor board I feel I heard it most or was worse the faster I drove or more noticeable at 50+ mph. The dealership found the j clip used to secure the wheel liner or mud flap on the passenger front was hitting the body side and as soon as they repositioned or adjusted the noise went away. hope this helps.

Ok guys,

 

It is not the exhaust vibrating and its not the wheel liner. (verified these two) Most noticeable at cold idle and while driving with slight throttle in a high gear at low RPM.  Sounds like a can full of marbles.

Duramax Diesel Exhaust Isolator No Longer in Production

August 31, 2020

A missing exhaust isolator (Fig. 5) on 2020 Silverado and Sierra models equipped with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine (RPO LM2) and the single exhaust system (RPO NB5) should not be installed as part of a warranty claim at the dealership.

The exhaust isolator is no longer installed in order to address a noise concern. However, the exhaust hanger on the frame and the hanger on the exhaust pipe are still in production. The exhaust hanger on the other side of the exhaust pipe near this location is still connected. (Fig. 6) These changes went into effect at the Fort Wayne assembly plant on June 17, 2020 and are part of the continuous product improvement process. Light-duty trucks with the diesel engine and single exhaust built at the Silao assembly plant have not yet removed the isolator from production.

The exhaust hanger was communicating an exhaust boom due to a structural vibration. Without the isolator connecting the exhaust pipe to the hanger, the boom sound is eliminated. At the same time, it was determined that the hanger is not needed at that location on the exhaust pipe and that durability and the function of the exhaust are unaffected.

If an exhaust isolator is installed on the exhaust pipe and connected to the hanger, the exhaust boom sound may be heard. A warranty claim should not be submitted for installing the exhaust isolator.

TIP: The Electronic Parts Catalog may show the eliminated exhaust hanger on the single exhaust pipe. The catalog is currently being updated to remove the hanger.

Good update but not my issue.  This only applies to the Diesel with a single exhaust system.  It's also not the same noise.

I know.

It was for some of the 3.0 owners that were posting/following. 

 

Is your noise the high pressure fuel pump?

‘Can full of marbles’ sounds are usually caused by either exhaust leak, heat shield rattle (temperature can affect this), or more likely something inside the catalytic converters is loose. Could also be the exhaust flap being loose in its mounts I suppose. 
 

Kind of off topic now, but removing the exhaust isolator for the duramax exhaust only made it rattle and more noisy, plus I could feel the exhaust swinging side to side with it removed. The problem is they got the exhaust for it from Pep Boys on clearance lol. Ray Charles could have put down better looking welds. I’m surprised they even hold together. They definitely wouldn’t hold even 50psi.
