Passenger side ticking sound. What is it?

if it is rhythmic, and sounds like a ticking lifter,  my dealer told me that was just the dfm system working

My DFM is disabled.  I don't have exhaust flappers or loose heat shields.  Again, this noise could be completely normal I would just like to know what the heck it is.

Oil Pump Cold Start Rrrrp or Rasp

The oil pump design has changed from a gerotor gear type pump to a two-stage vane type pump for fuel economy reasons. At temperatures at or below 0°C (32°F), or when the engine has been sitting for a few hours, it is possible to have air enter the pump through normal oil drain back. Upon startup, the owner may hear a short “Rrrrp” or “Rasp” coming from the front of the engine. It is most often heard during a remote start.

 There is nothing wrong with the oil pump or oil system. No repairs should be attempted for this condition.

My flappers rattled at idle and low rpm. I rigged those to be open all the time. Maybe that’s what you’re hearing?

Kind of off topic now, but removing the exhaust isolator for the duramax exhaust only made it rattle and more noisy, plus I could feel the exhaust swinging side to side with it removed. The problem is they got the exhaust for it from Pep Boys on clearance lol. Ray Charles could have put down better looking welds. I’m surprised they even hold together. They definitely wouldn’t hold even 50psi.

Noob question: what pressure do you expect in your exhaust system?

That would be engine and application specific. Usually there is not much pressure in an exhaust system. Also depends where you measure. However, a weld that won’t hold 50psi, won’t hold 1psi. But you will see the pressure drop from 50 to 49 a lot sooner than 1 to 0. Regardless, any leaks in the exhaust contribute to noise and/or rattle in the exhaust note. They can also pull in oxygen and affect readings for various oxygen and exhaust sensors if the leak is upstream of the sensors.
