I have some questions about fuel lines on a 2018 5.3L gas truck:

 

- Under my truck I see 2 main fuel lines, which one would be the main fuel sending line?

 

- These black nylon hoses, do they have a specific name? Can the metal ends be removed with a GM fuel line tool?

 

- Could these black hoses connectors be replaced with a quick (push) connect fuel fitting?

 

I'm looking for a place to tie in a remote fuel filter, so I'm thinking I might be able to remove one of these black hoses, replace it with another suitable fuel line/hose with a proper fitting.

 

Thoughts?

 

1st picture is further back towards fuel tank, then the two lines go past a pump (what pump is this?) then the black hoses appear, before the lines turn upwards into the engine bay.

The fittings in the last picture look like they're crimped and not removable/disconnectable.  It was probably done to splice in that braided line allowing for a little fudge factor in the installation process.

 

You could probably cut the feed and splice in some fittings, but you're beyond my experience there.

Anyone know if the bottom line, or top line, would be the one sending fuel to the engine?

Go back to the tank and there is one feed line coming off the tank into a hard line which should be the top line.

 

This is a picture of a flex fuel sensor install on these trucks. They run returnless fuel systems and the other line is a evap line I believe.

I also found this schematic which confirms the #3 line is the feed line and it is indeed the top line.

Next question......why does it seem there are NO aftermarket fuel filter setups on these gas engines?

 

I see Duramax's, Cummins, Powerstrokes, etc all have various dual water seperation / filtration remote filters that tie into the fuel lines along the frame, but I've never seen it for a gas version of the same truck. Is it incompatible with the gas fuel pump or pressure?

You can, but those setups are fairly expensive, and of relatively limited benefit for a gas engine.

 

For my '04, I installed the fuel filter used for earlier GMT800's by cutting out a section of the fuel line and splicing it in.

Un-necessary in a gas application, that's why.  Same with the remote filters.  Not needed for gas.  Diesel engines, its a BIG deal to have no water and clean/filtered fuel.  Diesel fuel is susceptible to have water in it, as well as fungi/bacteria and sometimes algae.     

 

Gas engines, a good quality top tier fuel is all that is needed really.  Maybe the occasional Techron treatment.

OK gotcha, thanks.

 

But let's say, for the sake of total overkill, i still wanted to do this......would there be any issues with the 5.3 gas engine to put in a setup similar to the diesel versions? Anything to be aware of?

    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.

    • Probably a one and done post, but do you have a CEL on the dash? Was having issues with my transmission, fortunately only a week, and it turned out to be the transmission harness. Valve body was in good shape, so new harness with all the sensors attached, new fluid, and filter. Seems to have worked so far?
