going from 17" to 20" on Stock 2017 Silverado?

Recommended Posts

Hey all.  I'm new here but would really appriciate some experienced opinions.  I searched and couldn't find a like situation.  I have a 2017 Silverado LT that came with 255/70 R17 tires.  I've hit 25K miles and those factory tires are shot.  So looking at upgrading wheels as well.

I'm looking at some 275/55 R20 Continental Terraincontact A/T tires on some Fule Off-Road Vapor wheels.  Both seem to be pretty popular models.

Looking at tiresize.com the size would change:

width would increase by 0.8"

Circumference increase 2.7"

Height increase by 0.8" (to 31.9")

Would this fit without a leveling kit?  I know they sell Silverado 1500's with up to 22" wheels.

Also.. has anyone regretted going up to 20"?  Any issues?

Thanks for any advice!

It's a shorter sidewall, so it will ride harder when you switch.

But it will fit just fine.

You really only got 25,000 on the first ones? Damn son.

Bought it new, don't drive too hard and only put 25K on in 3 years.  Some mountain trips as I live in Colorado.  The wear is pretty even and there isn't too much tread left.  A little more tread on the back but not to get me through winter with another rotate.  I was pretty shocked when I looked at the tread.  They are Bridgestone tires, assuming pretty cheap.  My first truck, but never had issues with tires on cars before.

Earlier this year I went from stock LT 17s, to a set of 20's from a new body 2019 LTZ. The wheels came with 275/60/20 tires, which are actually 33's. They fit fine, but my speedo seems off about 1-4 mph depending on speed.

No noticable ride quality difference, but changes the look of the truck a ton.

Looks good! The wheels make a big difference.  I read somewhere that because of the square fender that 33" needed at least a leveling kit to not rub.  Glad that's not the case for you.  I was looking at the shorter sidewall to keep speed and tuning close to the factory.  Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for sharing this.  I am just at the beginning of very similar upgrade.  I want to swap out my 2018 stock tires from the 255/70/17R to 275/65/18R.  I want a more aggressive tread, and slightly larger wheel, but don't want to have to modify the truck with a lift.  I found a pretty cool website that shows an overlay of the new tire over the original tire.   www.tiresize.com  This is currently my favorite website.  This is something I was dreading because I wanted to be sure my new wheels fit.  Seeing yours makes me a lot more comfortable with it.

The last thing I can't figure out is what to do with the wheel offset.  It looks like the stock are 24mm.  Since I'm going +3 and getting a bit wider.  What offset should I use?  Tire rack seems to give me 19, 5, -19 as options.  Obviously not poking out to -19.  I read somewhere to try to stay within 5mm, which would put me at a 19.  Is that true?  Seems adding width it would be good to stick out further, but I don't want to do any harm.  Any advice?
