Thinking someone paid for a service they did not need. Jim watch this video. Sound isn't too good but if you compare the (2) trucks/windshields, they are different 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Windshield Replacement Features

Not sure if have done so, but go stand in front of your truck with a flashlight and shine it in the "hole" and you will see your camera. It just needs a clear sight path to work. (Truck on the right in the video).

So the old one would require to be removed & installed on the replacement, which if that is the case, would require a "recalibration" by the windshield installer to remove any liability of the Lane Departure being set incorrectly. That's what was explained to me by Safelite when they installed the windshield on our X5 with this feature. That would hold true for GM as well. It's pretty standard procedure on all cars/trucks with this option.

The camera is taken out of the bracket, left hanging by it's power cord, and then slid into the new bracket never losing contact with the truck, that is why it is reused and not included with the new windshield. I will concede this battle with one last question, did you ask why it has to be done, or just accept that the tech said it had to be?
14sierraALT Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 anytime a windshield is replaced the calibration of the lane departure camera is required. Now will the system work yes but its basically the vehicle manufacturer covering there ass and if the system doesn't work properly they can turn around and say well its because a windshield was installed on the vehicle and the calibration was never performed.

Does not really answer the question of why does it need to be done? What is done when recalibrated, other than being "recalibrated"? It is a camera that never loses power, and why would the factory glass replacement cause any issues?

The reason is, that the bracket that holds the camera, needs to be attached /glued to the new windshield, which will not be in the same location as the old one, nor will the windshield be exactly placed where the old one was by fractions on an inch. So, when the camera is reattached to the bracket/windshield, it is very likely NOT in the same location as before & needs to be "readjusted" electronically to know where the center & outside lines are. It's not a mechanical "line recognition" but an electronic one, so the technician has to hook up a portable computer to the car/truck & tell the camera where it is. He does this by driving the car for 15-20 mins to get it adjusted correctly. Otherwise the car's camera thinks it's in the same place as before it was relocated & a 1/4" move of the cameras from where it used to be will multiplied to where it reads the lines on the road. this video explains it better that I can. Hope this helps Joe's Glass Co Windshield Re-Calibration 1
