Impala Problem

I'm thinking starter, maybe?

My parents headed out of town for a few days two days ago, and when they get to a gas station 4 miles away to fill up for the trip, it won't start. two days prior, the same thing happened. We had the battery checked, and it's fine(actually got a better than normal reading for it's age). We jumped it, but the thing is it wouldn't start right off. I didn't hear the starter at all, so I just held the key turned and about 5 seconds later, the it starts right up like nothing had happened. it wasn't slow to crank, it just didn't do squat(except accessaries), they all of a sudden it's running. You gusy with the newer GM's know how you just gotta barely more the key and the car starts itself, the starter makes that little buzz and teh car starts, well, when it won't it dosen't do ANYTHING? or could it be a the turn-key ignition in the dash?

2001 Impala 3.4, all maintaince done 500 miles ago, except P/S flush and brake flsuh

Sounds like the brushes on the stator are getting hung up on the brushes in the wall. Usually after a few times of trying to crank it, it'll break loose and turn, but if not, I object such as a mallet, or maglite, or something with a nice swift blow to the case, nothing that hard, will break it loose.

Could possibly be the cables? Corrosion inside? Just a thought, that would explain the fact that it didn't want to jump start right away because the juice still couldn't make it to the starter.

I had this happen on my Old 68 impala, went and replace the starter and it acted the same as with the old starter. Low and behold the cables were corroded inside the caseing and you couldn't tell till you cut it open.

Just the thought.
