I myself would stick to one of the other true synthetics. Mobil 1 has been around a while and is easy to get. It has a great track record and I feel it is a little above Royal Purple.

AMSOIL has been around over 30 years even before Mobil 1. It to has a great track record and a great following. It is slowly getting to the general public around the country otherwise it can be ordered online and UPS to your door.

RedLine is another great synthetic. It too has a good following and can be purchased at select stores.

Royal Purple is a good synthetic, don't get me wrong but there are a few out there that seem to have a slight advantage in some respects. If you can get it locally and don't mind the price then great. Mobil 1 is about the easiest to get.

Check out this site, BITOG and do a search on there for Royal purple or just cruise around in there. That site has a ton of information and has a ton of used oil analysis to check out and see how well all the oils hold up in different vehicles.

I run all synthetics in my BMW: Mobil 1 in the engine, redline in the diff and trans. I go with redline b/c it is heavily favored among the BMW fans, and has a history.

Royal Purple base stock is made by ExxonMobil and is the same as Mobil 1 base. The difference is in the additive packages. So far I've seen nothing to indicate it is better than Mobil 1. Amsoil is a different and REAL synthetic (Mobil 1 and Royal Purple start from regular oil to make the synthetic stock) and will last longer and protect better. You will have to put a lot of miles per year and a keep the vehicle a long time to get pay back for the extra price. Mobil 1 works well enough for me @ 14,000 miles per year.

use it my 2002 silverado 4x4. I have no dyno results, but she feels quicker in the mid range!!!!! They say that if you use all there products (tranny, oil) you can gain as much as 10 ponnies. I have used Mobil one (switch over at 10,000 miles) Both are good oil's.

Synthetic is synthetic, regardless of base stock they start with so that is a kinda a silly statement. Since Mobile on is made for convential oil there is no compatabilty issue if they are mixed. To suggest Amsoil is better or will last longerjust because it is based on a different base stock is just plain silly. they will both get dirty with time. I have been using Mobile one for 15 years plus and no complaints yet. I also use Mobile's synthetic ATF fluid in my snow plow hydrualic systems as it flows better at low temps.

Some guys on the BMW boards check into the Mobil one/reg oil statement.

from what they learned, acutally the claims that Mobil 1 orginates from regular oil was traced back to Amsoil "propaganda". In fact if you look at data provided by Amsoil, and data provided by Mobil 1, Mobil 1 outperforms Amsoil in certian oil characteristics!!! and that's using Amsoil's OWN data(as thes companys are reqirred to release certain stats)!!!!!

This link is very informative when it comes to oil stats:

Oil Infromation; gained form the oil manufacturers

Also, when RP came out, Mobil one used the "tri-synthetic" additive package. The Newer "SuperSyn package" is supposed to be MANY times better than the old Tri-Syn, hense maybe why Amsoil started heavily attacking Mobil 1 when SuperSyn came out.

If you want the best, maybe you should look at Redline. They are really low-key compared to Amsoil, yet have been around just as long(maybe longer). Their products are primarily used in racing, and are the favorite to most of the BMW guys I know.

Not really as Mobile 0ne was used on the race circuit for several years before it was ever offered to the general public and Mobile (now Exxon/Mobile) has been making synthetic oil for aircraft since the 50's and possibly before that too.

What I ment to say it was the first API certified oil to be available to the public. Thus their logo "First In Synthetics" This was back in 1972.

Mobil 1 is an awesome deal. Found it at a Wal-Mart in Winter Park Florida for $3.80 a quart. Can't beat that price. :chevy:

Thanks Snowman for bringing up that info. I have a hard time correctly expressing what I'm trying to say at times.
