While first working the deal over the phone, I asked a lot of questions about the original owner, why he traded this truck with only 5k miles on it, what he traded for, etc.

Reading between the lines, I think they gave the original owner a lowball trade in value.

Sounds like it. Probably someone who got all tingly about the new SUVs and just HAD to have one. A dealer's delight.
